BUIES CREEK – Nathalia Silva touched ahead of the rest of the field in both the 500- and 1000-yard Freestyle, while Mariel Mencia Martinez, Ketlyn Rodriguez Matos and newcomer Chiara Ambrosi all captured event titles as well, but the UNC Pembroke swimming team succumbed to NCAA Division I rival Campbell, 155-102, in the season opener for both squads on Saturday.
 
Silva opened her day with a win of more than three seconds in the 1000-yard Freestyle, but bettered that performance with a win of more than seven seconds in the 500-yard Freestyle. She also finished second in the 100-yard Freestyle – just 2.09 seconds behind Campbell's Meredith Ashburn.
 
Mencia Martinez registered a time of 24.05 on the way to capturing top honors in the 50-yard Freestyle, and Rodriguez Matos finished nearly 1-1/2 seconds better than the rest of the field in the 200-yard Breaststroke. Ambrosi tallied a win of more than five seconds in the 200-yard Individual Medley to highlight her collegiate debut.
 
The Braves will be back in action again next weekend when they make the long trek to Kingsport, Tenn., to take part in the King Invitational. The two-day event will take place inside the Kingsport Aquatics Center.
