No. 18 Wrestling Hosts Emmanuel On Witches & Wizards Night

| By:
PEMBROKE – The 18th-ranked UNC Pembroke wrestling team will make its long-awaited homecoming on Thursday evening when the Braves suit up to take on South Atlantic Conference Carolinas foe Emmanuel as part of Witches & Wizards Night at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. Wrestling action is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m., and admission is free.

The Black & Gold (7-1, 4-0 SACC) has captured four of the five previous matchups with the Lions (3-2, 2-2) in a series that dates back to the 2015-16 season. Emmanuel registered a 27-21 victory over the Braves as part of its initial trip to Pembroke on Feb. 5, 2017, but the Braves have rattled off three-straight wins since. UNCP has outscored the Lions, 77-12, over the last two matchups, including a 36-8 win in Franklin Springs, Ga., last season.

Redshirt sophomore Logan Seliga (125 pounds) will bring a No. 2 national ranking, as well as a perfect 16-0 record, into Thursday's tilt with Emmanuel, while 9th-ranked Jake Piccirilli (149) sports a team-best 18 wins in 2022-23. Two wrestlers have made their season debuts since the Black & Gold last competed at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. Redshirt senior Bryce Walker (197), a two-time NCAA Championships qualifier, has won eight of his first nine bouts this season, while Rahsaan Vereen (165), an NCAA qualifier last season, raked in his first win of the season on Saturday against Belmont Abbey.

The Lions snapped a two-match skid with a dominant 37-6 home victory over Brewton-Parker on January 4, and already sport conference wins over Belmont Abbey and Emory & Henry. Emmanuel will showcase talent from the start of Thursday's dual as 125-pounder Gavin Hayes and 133-pounder Harvey Ridings have combined for 27 wins already in 2022-23.
