GREENVILLE, S.C. – It was déjà vu all over again for junior Mariel Mencia Martinez on Wednesday when another dominant performance was rewarded with Conference Carolinas Swimmer of the Week laurels, the league office announced. The announcement marked the third time this season that she has been crowned with the honor.
 
Mencia Martinez, a product Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, won three individual events and swam a leg on an event champion relay squad, as the Braves bested both 40th-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne and Roanoke at a tri-meet on Saturday inside the UNCP Aquatics Center. She established an NCAA B Standard qualifying time, as well as shattered her own school record, with a mark of 23.62 seconds in the 50-yard Freestyle, while also finishing at the top of the field in the 100-yard Freestyle and 100-yard Butterfly events.
 
A 16-time all-conference performer across her 3-plus years in the Black & Gold, Mencia Martinez has already raked in 17 individual event titles in 2022-23, including five in both the 50-yard Freestyle and 100-yard Butterfly disciplines.
 
The Black & Gold will return to action on Saturday when it treks to Spartanburg, S.C., to take on Conference Carolinas rival Converse (4-3) in an 11 a.m. dual meet inside the Montgomery Student Center.
