Football Picks Up Dominating Win Against Fairmont State

Box Score PEMBROKE - The UNC Pembroke football had a big day on offense setting school records in rushing touchdowns and rushing yards in a single game to help fuel a 49-7 victory over Fairmont State on Saturday at Grace P. Johnson Stadium.
 
The victory for the Braves (4-2, 3-3 MEC) snapped a two-game losing skid and marked the first victory at home against Fairmont State since 2010. The setback for the Falcons (5-2, 3-2 MEC) snapped a three-game winning streak and marked their first road loss of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Fairmont State started the game on offense but was forced to a three-and-out from the UNC Pembroke defense. Colin Johnson rushed up the middle for a gain of 25 yards followed by a four-yard gain from Sincere Baines. Johnson split the defense and rushed up the middle for a gain of 17 yards to move the offense to the Fairmont State 22-yard line. Baines ran down the sideline for a gain of 15-yards and Johnson connected on a pass to Keshawn Jefferson for a touchdown. UNCP 7, FSU 0
 
UNCP's defense forced another three-and-out drive for FSU and UNC Pembroke started their offensive drive on the Falcons 45-yard line. Sincere Baines started the drive with a rush to the right side for a gain of 13-yards and then caught a 29-yard pass from Colin Johnson to get to the Fairmont State three-yard line. Johnson kept the ball and rushed in for a touchdown. UNCP 14, FSU 0
2ND QUARTER
Fairmont State was forced to punt and after a short kick, the Braves started the drive on their own 48-yard line. Colin Johnson found an open Keshawn Jefferson for a gain of 23-yards on the first play of the drive. Sincere Baines broke free from the defense for a 27-yard touchdown run. UNCP 21, FSU 0
 
The Falcons intercepted a UNCP pass to get the ball back and moved the ball after a completion from Michael Floria to Carter Giacomo. Donovan Washington ran right up the middle to the end zone for a touchdown. UNCP 21, FSU 7
 
JaQuan Kelly rushed to the right for a gain of 11 yards followed by a 27-yard gain from Colin Johnson. Johnson found an open Josiah Hayes for a seven-yard completion to set up a 12-yard rush to the end zone for Johnson. UNCP 28, FSU 7
3RD QUARTER
JaQuan Kelly rushed on the first two plays of the drive for a total of 19 yards, followed by an 18-yard rush by Colin Johnson. Johnson completed a pass through to middle to Sincere Baines for a gain of 18-yards, but Kelly rushed down the sideline for a 44-yard touchdown. UNCP 35, FSU 7
 
Colin Johnson broke free from the defense and rushed up the middle for a gain of 35 yards and ran it into the end zone after a 14-yard run. UNCP 42, FSU 7
 
UNCP started their drive on their own 34-yard line after a 27-yard punt from FSU. Sincere Baines found a gap and run it into the end zone for a 69-yard touchdown. UNCP 49, UNCP 7
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Colin Johnson finished the day 9-for-15 on passes with 90 yards and throwing for one touchdown. The Sanford ran the ball 12 times for a total of 153 yards and added three touchdowns on his own.
+ Sincere Baines rushed 19 times for a total of 186 yards. The true freshman added a pair of touchdowns and caught two passes for a total of 47 yards. 
+ Malik McKinzie and Kinstin Reaves each registered seven tackles. McKinzie had a pair of sacks for a loss of six yards, while Reaves had one sack for a loss of four yards. 
+ Jamae Blank picked up four tackles, two of which were for a loss of 12 total yards. The newcomer also had two tackles for a loss of 12 yards. 
NOTABLES
+ UNCP finished the day with a school record of 470 rushing yards. The Braves ran the ball 46 times and averaged 10.2 yards per carry. 
+ The Black & Gold also broke the school record for rushing touchdowns with six. 
+ FSU, who was averaging 212.6 rushing yards per game, was limited to just seven yards on the ground on Saturday. 
+ Fairmont State was sacked eight times for a total loss of 45 yards. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will skip town on Saturday and head to Buckhannon, W.Va., to face West Virginia Wesleyan. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at the Cebe Ross Field.
