No. 2 Duke Downs Men’s Basketball In Exhibition

DURHAM – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team shot better than 40-percent from the field, but No. 2 Duke attempted 43 free throws on the way to a 109-64 victory over the Braves in an exhibition on Wednesday evening inside Cameron Indoor Stadium. 
 
The Braves (0-0) scored 38 points from their bench during Wednesday night's exhibition and pulled down 31 rebounds. The Blue Devils (0-0) shot better than 53-percent from the field and did not trail during the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
Duke opened the game on a 14-2 run through the 17:17 mark, but a fastbreak layup from Dallas Gardner stopped the scoring drought for UNC Pembroke. The Blue Devils shot 55.2 percent from the floor and used a trey from Kyle Filipowski with 5-1/2 minutes remaining to push the hosts lead out to 47-14.
2ND HALF
Duke put together a 7-0 scoring run to extend the lead out to 80-35 with 13:11 remaining in regulation. JaJuan Carr knocked down a jumper from the top of the key, followed by a dunk from Elijah Cobb as UNCP trailed 94-46 with 6:45 on the clock. UNC Pembroke shot 46.7-percent from the field and used an old-fashioned three-point play from Dallas Gardner to end the game. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Dallas Gardner came off of the bench and finished with a game-high 21 points highlighted by an 11-for-14 clip from the charity stripe. The freshman also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
+ Nygell Verdier turned in a nine-point performance after going 4-for-4 from the floor. 
+ Jamarvious Jones and Elijah Cobb each added eight points. 
NOTABLES
+ Duke made good on 21-of-24 attempts from the free throw line in the first half and finished the game with a 36-for-43 performance. UNC Pembroke was limited to just 19 free throws, but made 13 of those attempts. 
+ The Braves scored 32 points in the paint, while the Blue Devils turned in 34 points from inside the paint. 
+ Duke scored 27 fast break points and 34 points off of 22 UNC Pembroke turnovers. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will officially lift the lid on their 2023-24 schedule on Saturday when they face Emporia State at 8 p.m. in the Small College Hall of Fame Invitational. The two-day invitational will be played inside the Jenkins Fieldhouse in Lakeland, Florida.
