Free Throws Key For Lenoir-Rhyne In Victory Over Women’s Basketball

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team shot 36.4 percent from the field, but Lenoir-Rhyne shot 26 free throws to help them to a 58-51 victory over UNCP on Sunday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The setback for the Braves (3-3) snapped a two-game winning streak but still hold a 14-11 all-time record against Lenoir-Rhyne. The Bears (3-2), who shot and made a season-high in free throws, have captured the last two meetings between the two squads.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
UNC Pembroke tied the score at 4 apiece with a fast break layup from Kalaya Hall halfway through the opening period. Blaikley Crooks gave Lenoir-Rhyne an 8-6 advantage with a layup, but Zaria Clark knotted the score at 8 with a jumper in the paint. UNCP shot 40 percent from the field and held a 12-8 lead following a fast break layup from Kelci Adams heading into the second quarter. 
2ND QUARTER
The Braves took what would be their largest lead of the night, 17-10, after a 3-pointer from Kelci Adams with 8:26 remaining in the half. The Bears used a 10-2 run to take a slight 20-19 lead with just under five minutes on the clock, but Zaria Clark would give the hosts a 23-20 lead with a jumper in the paint. Both teams shot at least 30 percent from the field as the teams headed to the locker rooms with the scored tied at 24.
3RD QUARTER
Lenoir-Rhyne opened the half on an 8-2 surge to take a 32-26 lead with 6:44 on the clock. Malea Garrison cut the UNCP deficit back to 32-28 with a fast break layup, but the Bears drained a pair of free throws to push their lead back out to 34-28 halfway through the quarter. The Bears held a 41-34 lead with 31 seconds on the clock, but Kalaya Hall drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key as time expired as UNC Pembroke trailed 41-37 heading into the final stanza. 
4TH QUARTER
The Bears used a pair of free throws from Emily Harman to take their largest lead of the contest, 47-38 with 5:55 remaining in regulation. Natalie Evington canned a 3-pointer from the corner to cut the hosts deficit back to 51-48 with 1:58 on the clock, but Lenoir-Rhyne made good on five of the final six free throws to stop a UNCP comeback.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Kelci Adams finished with 14 points on 6-for-14 shooting. The redshirt junior grabbed four rebounds, had a pair of assists and steals, and logged one block.
+ Zaria Clark finished with 14 points as well. Clark nearly registered a double-double with nine rebounds. The junior also had six assists, three blocks and one steal. 
+ Aniah McManus pulled down a career-best seven rebounds. 
NOTABLES
+ Lenoir Rhyne finished the contest going 23-for-26 from the free throw line. UNC Pembroke was just 6-for-8 from the charity stripe.  UNCP did not attempt a free throw in the first or the third quarter, while LR had 12 attempts in the final quarter. 
+ UNCP posted a 24-22 advantage over LR with points in the paint. The Braves also saw success in transition scoring 21 points from fast break opportunities and limiting the Bears to just three transition points. 
+ The three losses for UNCP have come via seven points or less.
