Third Quarter Propels Women’s Basketball By Newberry

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team shot 62.5 percent in the third quarter and scored 30 points during the period to help the Braves to a 62-51 non-conference victory against Newberry on Wednesday at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The victory for the Braves (4-3) marked the first victory against Newberry in the last four meetings. The setback for the Wolves (2-4) have now lost their last two contests. 







 
THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
UNC Pembroke knotted the score at 6 apiece with a jumper four minutes into the period from Zaria Clark. The Braves shot 47 percent from the field and used a 9-0 run to take a 15-6 lead with just under two minutes in the quarter. Newberry stopped the scoring surge with a three from the top of the key, but an Aniah McManus steal resulted in a fast break layup for Hannah Russell at the buzzer as UNCP held a 17-9 advantage heading into the second quarter. 
2ND QUARTER
The Wolves used a 7-0 scoring run to cut their deficit back to 19-16 following a 3-pointer from Caylin Moment with 5:14 left in the half. The Braves were just 1-of-9 from the field as Newberry closed out the half on an 11-4 run to hold a 27-23 lead as the teams headed into the locker rooms. 
3RD QUARTER
Kelci Adams canned a three on a fast break three minutes into the half to spark the UNC Pembroke offense and tie the score at 33 apiece. The Braves shot a game-high 62.5 percent from the field and outscored the Wolves 30-11 during the frame to hold a 53-38 advantage heading into the final stanza.
4TH QUARTER
Newberry scored the first seven points of the quarter to trim its deficit back to 53-45 with 5:27 remaining in regulation. Hannah Russell drained a jumper in the paint to extend the UNCP lead, but the Wolves would use another 6-0 surge to cut their deficit back to 55-51 with just under a minute left in play. However, UNCP scored the final six points of the game to fuel the outcome.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Zaria Clark logged a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds in 39 minutes of work. The performance marked a game-high for both rebounds and points.   
+ Kelci Adams finished with 16 points highlighted by a 4-for-10 clip from the perimeter. The Fort Mill, S.C., native flirted with a double-double with seven rebounds, while also logging a trio of assists and one steal. 
+ Hannah Russell added 10 points off of the bench and also pulled down seven rebounds. Aniah McManus added six points with six assists, four steals, two rebounds, and one block. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke scored 22 points in transition and held Newberry to 0 fast break points.
+ The Braves scored 20 points from 20 turnovers from the Wolves. 
+ The Black & Gold held a 17-2 advantage with free throw attempts. The Braves made good on 15-of-17 attempts. 
+ UNCP held Newberry to 37.5 percent shooting. The shooting performance from the Wolves marked the second-lowest shooting performance, being 34.5 percent during the season opener. Newberry also had just nine offensive rebounds which marked a season low.
