Women’s Basketball Too Much For Southern Wesleyan

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team scored 20 points in the paint and 18 points off of turnovers on the way to a 68-58 conference victory over Southern Wesleyan on Saturday at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The Braves (5-3, 1-0 CC) have now won two consecutive games and improve to 7-0 all-time against Southern Wesleyan. The Warriors (2-6, 0-1 CC) have now lost their last three contests and are 0-3 when playing on the road this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Kalaya Hall gave UNC Pembroke an early 6-3 lead in the opening period just four minutes into action. Kelci Adams extended the UNCP lead out to 13-6 with a 3-pointer at the two minute mark, but Southern Wesleyan cut their deficit back to 13-9 with an old-fashioned three-point play. The hosts shot 37.5 percent from the field and used a trey from Kalaya Hall at the buzzer to give the Braves a 16-9 advantage. 
2ND QUARTER
Natalie Evington canned a three at the start of the quarter to extend the UNCP lead out to 19-9, but the Warriors went on a 14-2 run to take what would be their largest lead on the afternoon, 23-21 with a 3-pointer from Taylin Smith halfway through the quarter. Natalie Evington drained a three from the top of the key to spark the offense for the Braves, who closed out the half on an 11-2 run to hold a 32-25 lead as the teams headed into the locker room. 
3RD QUARTER
Southern Wesleyan trimmed its deficit back to 34-28 with a pair of free throws from Tristen Berry two minutes into the half. UNC Pembroke went on a 17-4 run capped off with 3-pointers from Aniah McManus and Kelci Adams to give the hosts their largest lead of the afternoon, 51-32, with 2:41 left in the period. SWU was limited to just 15.3 percent shooting from the field as UNCP shot a game-high 57.1 percent and held a 51-37 lead heading into the final stanza.
4TH QUARTER
Southern Wesleyan went on a 12-0 run to start the quarter and cut its deficit back to 51-49 with 6:55 remaining in regulation. Kelci Adams sparked the offense with a big three as UNC Pembroke went on a 7-0 scoring surge to extend the lead out to 58-49 with a fast break layup from Kalaya Hall. The Warriors whittled their deficit back to 62-58 with a pair of free throws from Shelby Glance with two minutes left in the game, but Hannah Russell sank a three from the top of the key with 43 seconds left to secure the victory. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Zaria Clark turned in a game-high 17 points on a 7-for-13 shooting performance. Clark pulled down six rebounds and dished out five assists.
+ Kalaya Hall nearly recorded a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds. Hall also had two steals and one assist.
+ Kelci Adams finished with 12 points on a 4-for-11 shooting performance. The redshirt junior had four rebounds, one steal, one assist, and one block.
+ Hannah Russell came off of the bench with 12 points, four rebounds, two steals, one block and one assist. Aniah McManus added five points, five rebounds, and four assists. 
NOTABLES
+ Saturday's victory marked the seventh consecutive win against Southern Wesleyan. 
+ UNCP held the lead for 37 minutes of Saturday's victory. 
+ The Black & Gold scored 18 points off of 13 Southern Wesleyan turnovers. UNCP committed a season-low five turnovers. 
+ The Braves held SWU to just 34 percent shooting from the field, which marked the lowest shooting percentage for the Warriors in the last five games. Southern Wesleyan was also just 5-for-26 from the perimeter.
