Men’s Basketball Overpowers Southern Wesleyan In Conference Opener

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team shot a season-high 55.2 percent from the field and picked up 56 points from its bench on the way to an 84-59 victory over Southern Wesleyan on Saturday at Lumee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The Braves (6-3, 1-0 CC) have now won three of their last four conference openers have now won four consecutive games. The Warriors (0-7, 0-1 CC) fall to 1-6 all-time against UNCP.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
UNC Pembroke shot 69.6 percent from the field and took a 15-7 lead with a fast break 3-pointer from Jamarvious Jones with 14:33 left to play in the half. Southern Wesleyan cut its deficit back to 15-11 with a fast break layup from Che Smith, but the Braves would go on a 9-2 run to extend their lead out to 24-13 with a layup from Javonte Waverly. UNCP limited SWU to 36.7 percent shooting from the field as the hosts held a 43-28 lead as the teams headed into the locker rooms. 
2ND HALF
Tyreik McCallum pushed the UNCP lead out to 47-29 with a layup just two minutes into the half, but Southern Wesleyan scored the next five points to trail 47-34 at the 16:45 mark. The Braves put together an 18-0 run capped off with a fast break layup from Josh Berenbaum to lead 65-34 with 11 minutes left in regulation. UNCP held SWU to 39.1 percent shooting as the hosts took their largest lead of the night, 82-45, with a free throw from Cortez Marion-Holmes with 3:47 on the clock. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Dallas Gardner came off of the bench with a game-high 11 points on 4-for-7 shooting. The freshman logged five steals, pulled down four rebounds, and had a pair of blocks in 21 minutes of action. 
+ Javonte Walverly also came off of the bench and added 11 points on a 4-for-5 clip and dished out a trio of assists. 
+ Josh Berenbaum turned in 10 points highlighted by a 2-for-3 night from the perimeter while also grabbing four defensive rebounds. 
+ Bradlee Haskell also added 10 points and was 4-for-6 from the free throw line. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot a season-high 55.2 percent from the field during Saturday's victory. 
+ The Black & Gold scored 56 points from its bench and 29 points off of 20 Southern Wesleyan turnovers. The 20 turnovers for SWU marked a season-high. 
+ UNCP picked up scoring from 13 of the 16 players that logged minutes on Saturday. Four players logged double-figures. 
+ UNC Pembroke did not trail during Saturday's contest and held the lead for 39 minutes. 
+ The Braves held a 28-9 advantage with points scored off of fast break opportunities. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will get over a week off and be back in action on Dec. 13 when they trek to Bristol, Tenn., to face King. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. inside the Student Center Complex.
