No. 5 Men’s Basketball Runs Win Streak To 15, Routs Southern Wesleyan

PEMBROKE – The 5th-ranked UNC Pembroke men's basketball team shot nearly 57 percent from the field and took the lead for good on JaJuan Carr's 3-pointer just 19 seconds into the contest as the Braves stretched their win streak out to 15 games with an 86-64 rout of visiting Southern Wesleyan on Wednesday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

It was the seventh-straight home win as well for the Black & Gold (22-1, 14-1 CC) who nestled itself among the nation's top-5 teams in both national polls late Tuesday afternoon. The Warriors (3-19, 3-11) have now dropped 11 of their last 12 outings, and now sport three-straight setbacks in the series with UNCP.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
Missed shots were a rarity in the opening half as both teams managed 50 percent field goal shooting or better, but it was the perimeter shooting for the Braves that inevitably allowed them to lug a 42-32 advantage into the break. The hosts held the Warriors scoreless through the first four minutes of the contest en route to building a 7-0 lead, and led by as many as 15 points, 32-17, after Elijah Cobb's layup at the 8:00 mark. Southern Wesleyan, twice, whittled its deficit down to eight points in the final 3-1/2 minutes of the stanza, but four-straight points by Amare Miller pushed UNCP's lead back to double digits.
2ND HALF
The Warriors hung around for a good part of the opening seven minutes of the second half, but Javonte Waverly's 3-pointer with 13:22 left to play opened up a 12-4 run for the Black & Gold that allowed it to pull away for good. The Braves pushed their lead out to 20 points, 71-51, on another 3-pointer from Waverly just more than two minutes later, and made it a 24-point game – their largest lead of the evening – on a pair of free throws from Cortez Marion-Holmes with just more than 5-1/2 minutes left in regulation.
