PEMBROKE – The 5th-ranked UNC Pembroke men's basketball team shot 56.5 percent from the field, including a 10-for-15 clip from the perimeter, and put together a 16-4 run early in the second half to pull away for good, as the Braves clinched at least a share of the 2022-23 Conference Carolinas regular season title with an 87-61 victory over Chowan on Wednesday at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

It was the 18th-straight victory for the Black & Gold (25-1, 17-1 CC) who were included as one of 10 teams "under consideration" for selection into the NCAA Tournament in the first edition of the NCAA Southeast Region ranking that was released on Wednesday afternoon. Wednesday evening's result snapped a three-game win streak for the Hawks (12-11, 10-8) who have come away empty on their last three trips to Pembroke.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
The squads went tit-for-tat through the first seven minutes of the contest before Javonte Waverly's 3-pointer at the 12:27 mark sparked the Braves on a 20-6 run that would eventually give the hosts a 37-20 advantage with 5:53 left before the intermission. The Hawks would not go away that easily, however, and scored 10 of the last 11 points of the stanza to whittle their advantage down to single digits, 43-36, heading into the locker rooms.
2ND HALF
UNCP shot better than 62 percent from the field in the second half, including a quintet of 3-pointers (6 attempts), to eventually overwhelm the visiting Hawks. The hosts strung together a 16-4 run that spanned nearly six minutes early in the period, and pushed their lead out to as many as 27 points, 87-60, following Amare Miller's dunk with 41 ticks remaining. An 11-for-15 success rate in the second half contributed to the cause for the Black & Gold as well.
