Shepherd Rallies Past No. 13 Baseball In Series Opener

PEMBROKE – Visiting Shepherd took its second lead of the afternoon on Ross Mulhall's 3-run homer in the seventh, and the Rams held off a furious late-inning rally by the 13th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team to squeak by the Braves, 8-7, in the series opener on Friday at Sammy Cox Field.

The setback gives the Braves (9-2) consecutive home losses for the first time since April 1-2 last season when the club dropped back-to-back outings then-No. 5 North Greenville. It is the second win in the last three contests for the Rams (2-3) who have now taken two of the last three matchups in the series with the Black & Gold as well.

Will Harris (0-1) saddled the loss for the hosts after surrendering three earned runs on two hits and a walk in the seventh. Trent Harris struck out four in six innings of work, but was not awarded a decision for the second-straight appearance.

KEY INNINGS
BOT 6 UNCP loaded the bases with its first three at-bats in the sixth, and took its second lead of the afternoon when Spencer Faulkner hit a RBI single through the left side and Carlos Amezquita grounded in a run with the ensuing at-bat.
TOP 7 Idris Carter reached on a leadoff single, and Mike Guzzardo followed by drawing a 4-pitch walk, to set the table for Ross Mulhall who launched a 2-and-0 offering from Will Harris over the wall in left field.
BOT 9 Trailing by just a lone run after scoring twice in the eighth, the Braves used an Ethan Ott single and a pair of 4-pitch walks to loaded the bases with two outs. However, Shepherd reliever Brenden Lewis's curveball closed the door on the potential go-ahead rally.
