Softball Opens Conference Play With Sweep Over Southern Wesleyan

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke softball team pounded 21 hits and did not commit an error on the way to a sweeping Southern Wesleyan for the first Conference Carolinas matchup of the season on Friday at the UNCP Softball Field. The Braves scored in every inning of the opening contest to win 8-0 in five innings, and polished off the sweep with a 7-0 victory in the second game of the doubleheader. 
 
The Braves (9-16, 2-0 CC), who scored in all but two innings on Friday, marked the first time since the 2017 season that UNCP has won the opening two games of conference play. The Warriors (2-18, 0-2 CC) have now lost their last 18 outings and are 0-12 when playing on the road this season.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 2 Emily Rose walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Lauren Hilbourn smacked a double to center field to put runners on second and third. Olivia Hall drove in a run with a single down the left field line, followed by an RBI single from Marijo Wilkes to give the Braves a 3-0 lead. 
BOT 4 UNCP loaded the bases after a single from Marijo Wilkes, a Kadence Sheppard walk, and a single from Cirsten Calloway. MaKenna Sibbett beat out an infield single to score a run, and a single up the middle from Emily Rose plated two for the Braves who extended their lead to 7-0.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
BOT 5 Cirsten Calloway got the inning started with a leadoff double to the centerfield gap. Calloway advanced to third on a deep fly ball and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Emily Rose. MaKenna Sibbett lit up the scoreboard with a homer over the left field fence. UNCP put runners on first and second after a walk from Marijo Wilkes and a single from Lauren Hilbourn. Olivia Hall found the outfield grass for an RBI single and gave UNC Pembroke a 5-0 lead.

The Braves will close out Alumni Weekend on Saturday when they welcome Belmont Abbey (6-12, 1-1 CC) to Pembroke. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at the UNCP Softball Field.
