No. 13/18 Baseball Denied Weekend Sweep At Chowan

MURFREESBORO – Home-standing Chowan offset an early 3-0 deficit with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, and the Hawks picked up their first win of the 2023 season, while also staving off a weekend sweep, with a 9-7 win over the 18th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team on Sunday in northeast North Carolina.
 
The setback snapped a four-game win streak for the Braves (13-4, 5-1 CC) who will open up a 5-game home stand on Tuesday against Lake Erie. Sunday's result snapped a season-opening 14-game losing streak for Chowan (1-14, 1-8) who saw their first home action of the 2023 campaign this weekend.

KEY INNINGS
TOP 3 Ethan Ott climbed aboard via a leadoff hit by pitch, and Kody O'Connor reached in the ensuing at-bat on a costly fielding error. That set the stage for Joey Rezek who clubbed a one-strike offering over the fence in right field to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.
BOT 5 Chowan sent 11 batters to the plate in a 7-run fifth inning that gave it the lead for good. The Hawks opened the frame with three consecutive walks, and scratched the scoreboard in the ensuing at-bat on a 2-run single from Chris Bartholomew. Jackson Dunlap finished off the big inning with a 2-run homer to centerfield.
