Softball Stays Hot, Sweeps Chowan

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke softball team tallied 20 hits, including five home runs help fuel a key Conference Carolinas sweep over Chowan on Wednesday afternoon at the UNCP Softball Field. 

UNCP put up four runs in the fourth inning of the opening contest highlighted by a Marijo Wilkes homer on the way to a 5-2 victory. In game two, the Black & Gold scored four runs in the first inning as well as the fourth inning to polish off the sweep 9-3. 

The Braves (16-23, 9-5 CC) have now won their last seven contests at home as well as the last three conference series. The setback for the Hawks (16-21, 3-13 CC) marked the third consecutive loss and are now 6-24 all-time against UNCP.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 4 Samantha Allred got the inning started with a leadoff double to centerfield and scored on a double down the left field line from Lauren Hilbourn. Marijo Wilkes lit up the scoreboard with a homer over the left field fence. Oliva Hall drew a five-pitch walk and moved to third on a double to the outfield grass from MaKenna Sibbett. A long sacrifice fly to centerfield plated Hall to give UNCP a 4-0 lead. 
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
BOT 1 Cirstin Calloway got the inning started with a double to center field and scored on a single up the middle from Lauren Hilbourn. The Braves had runners on first and second after a single from Marijo Wilkes, but Olivia Hall cleared the bases with a three-run blast over the left field fence to give the hosts an early 4-0 lead.

Due to inclement weather that is in the forecast for Friday, the Braves will now play at Mount Olive (21-15, 10-6 CC) on Saturday. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for noon at Cassell Field.
