No. 18 Baseball Uses Freebies Aplenty To Dispel Catawba

SALISBURY – The 18th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team registered nine hits and drew 15 free passes to fuel an opportunistic offense as the Braves tacked up nine runs, including a 6-run fourth inning, to cruise past Catawba, 11-1, on Wednesday evening at Newman Park.

It was the 10th win in the last 12 outings for the Braves (33-10) who have now won three-straight games in the all-time series with their region nemesis – their longest win streak against the Indians (25-20) since the 2011 campaign. Catawba has now dropped six of its last eight outings.

Sophomore Evan McLean (4-2) struck out six and surrendered just three hits and a lone earned run across five solid innings from the hill to grab the win for the Black & Gold. Relievers Tyler Strickland (4 strikeouts), Rhett Burley (3) and Moses Brown (3) combined to strike out 10 batters across four scoreless innings of work.
