Soccer Edged By North Georgia In Season Opener

PEMBROKE – Bailey Vessell's goal in the 38th minute proved to be the lone score of the match as North Georgia (1-0-0) held off UNC Pembroke (0-1-0) in Friday's season opener. 

The Nighthawks returned the favor after falling to the Braves 1-0 in last year's season-opening match in Dahlonega. UNCP has lost three out of their last four home openers.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
38' Bailey Vessell touched home a service from outside the box that goalkeeper Chiara Coppin initially had her hands on for a moment.
 
TOP BRAVES
+ Senior Anna Grossheim led the way with a match-high four shots on goal.
+ Newcomer Reagan Carr had the only other shot on goal for the Black & Gold.
+ Senior Chiara Coppin registered five saves and allowed just one goal over a complete-match performance between the pipes. It was the 20th time in the last 22 appearances that Coppin has allowed one or fewer scores.
NOTABLES
+ The Braves fell to 13-9-0 in season openers with Friday's result.
+ UNCP suffered their first loss Lumbee River EMC Stadium since a 2-1 defeat to Mount Olive on October 21, 2021.
+ The Black & Gold are now 10-8-3 all-time against North Georgia. The Braves have lost the last two home meetings against the Nighthawks. 
   
UP NEXT
The Braves will go on the road for the first time in 2023 on Sunday when they make the trip to West Virginia to take on Davis & Elkins. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
