Football Falls Just Short To Charleston

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke football team registered 238 passing yards on offense and tallied 20 points in the third quarter, but a late interception stopped a comeback as Charleston held on for a 37-29 victory on Saturday at Grace P. Johnson Stadium. 
 
The setback marked the first home loss of the season for the Braves (1-2, 0-2 MEC). The Golden Eagles (3-0, 2-0 MEC) improve to 4-2 all-time against the Black & Gold after Saturday's result.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Charleston's defense forced a quick three-and-out for UNC Pembroke and forced the Braves to punt. The Golden Eagles started their first offensive drive on the UNCP 35-yard line but had to settle for a 31-yard field goal from Noah Benson for the first score of the contest. UC 3, UNCP 0
 
Chavon Wright rushed up the middle for a gain of 16 yards for the Golden Eagles. Javonte Howard connected with an open Tae Marrero for a 52-yard pass to the back of the endzone. UC 10, UNCP 0
2ND QUARTER
Charleston muffed a punt on the first play of the quarter as UNC Pembroke recovered on its own 49-yard line. The offensive momentum was quickly stopped after an interception from the Braves. Javonte Howard found the hands of Damon Mouzon for a 13-yard gain, followed by a rush up the middle from Chavon Wright for an additional 15-yard gain. Howard connected with an open Yves Bosmans in the back of the endzone for a 21-yard touchdown. UC 17, UNCP 0
 
Joshua Ellerbe ran a kickoff back for 69 yards to get the Braves to the Charleston 16-yard line. UNCP was unable to find the back of the endzone, but a 26-yard field goal from Ty Woods put the Black & Gold on the board. UC 17, UNCP 3
3RD QUARTER
Chavon Wright rushed for three straight plays to open to half to lead to a Charleston first down. Alex Brink rushed for a 21-yard touchdown just over a minute into the quarter. UC 24, UNCP 3
 
Colin Johnson connected with Malik Tobias down field for a 24-yard competition, followed by a connected pass to Trey Dixon for a 10-yard gain. Johnson rushed up the middle for a gain of 14 yards to put the Braves on the Charleston 10-yard line. JaQuan Kelly took it up the middle for a touchdown and the Braves made good on a Colin Johnson two-point conversion. UC 24, UNCP 11
 
Alex Brink cruised down field for the Golden Eagles for a 55-yard run. Javonte Howard completed a 22-yard pass to Yves Bosmans for a Charleston touchdown. UC 31, UNCP 11
 
Colin Johnson completed a pass to Trey Dixon for a 17-yard gain, as the Braves offense moved up the field after a 10-yard rush from JaQuan Kelly. Sincere Baines extended the drive with a catch for a 13-yard gain. Colin Johnson ran the ball in for a touchdown on a 17-yard run. UC 31, UNCP 17

Alex Brink rushed up the middle for a gain of 24 yards, but the UNCP defense forced a fumble as Caleb Hester recovered the fumble and ran it back for 21 yards to put the Braves in great position. Colin Johnson rushed for 24 yards on a pair of plays to get to the Charleston 13-yard line. UNCP converted on their third down with a Colin Johnson pass deep to EJ Gatling for a 23-yard touchdown pass as time expired for the quarter.  UC 31, UNCP 23
4TH QUARTER
Charleston's offense progressed down the field, but had to settle for a 35-yard field goal from Noah Benson to extend its lead. UC 34, UNCP 23
 
Colin Johnson completed a 25-yard pass to Trey Dixon and a 17-yard pass to Malik Tobias to get the UNCP offense moving. Johnson and Tobias connected once again, this time for a 26-yard touchdown pass to cut the Golden Eagles lead. UC 34, UNCP 29
 
Chavon Wright rushed for three-straight plays for a total of 23 yards for Charleston. The Golden Eagles got to the UNCP 5-yard line after a complete pass to Niko Kausky. UC made good on a 23-yard field goal from Noah Benson on fourth down. UC 37, UNCP 29
 
Colin Johnson rushed to the right side for a 19-yard gain and then completed a 14-yard pass to Trey Dixon to move the Braves down the field. Johnson hit an open EJ Gatling for a completion of 14 yards and then used a 3-yard JaQuan Kelly rush to get to the Charleston 19-yard line. Johnson's pass was deflected by a Charleston defender and intercepted by Roderick Webb to suspend the UNCP comeback. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Colin Johnson finished with 18-for-33 on passing attempts for a total of 230 yards. Johnson also rushed for 114 yards.
+ Trey Dixon and Malik Tobias each finished with 70 receiving yards, while Antonio Crim Jr. rushed for 47 yards. 
+ Sean Hill finished with a team-best 13 tackles, five of which were solo tackles. 
NOTABLES
+ Saturday's outcome marks the second consecutive loss for the Black & Gold this season. However, it was just the first loss in Pembroke on the season.
+ UNCP has dropped the last two contests with UC. It was the Golden Eagles first win in Pembroke since Sept. 12, 2012.
UP NEXT
The Braves will travel to West Virginia (0-3, 0-2 MEC) on Saturday to face West Liberty. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at the West Family Stadium.
