Soccer Rallies To Beat Lees-McRae

BANNER ELK – Maria Cancio's goal in the 76th minute proved to be the game-winner as UNC Pembroke (3-2-0, 2-0-0 CC) defeated host Lees-McRae (0-5-0, 0-1-0 CC) 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Braves found themselves down 1-0 in the first half, as Lees-McRae's Jordan Vaughn found the back of the net in the 30th minute. The Black & Gold responded in the second half with a goal from Morgan Hill in the 68th minute to knot the match, before Cancio put the visitors up for good.
 
The result marked UNCP's fifth win in five tries against the Bobcats.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
30' A corner kick from Lees-McRae's Kat Stiles found an open Jordan Vaughn, who placed a perfect header that found the back of the net.
68' UNCP answered as Morgan Hill won control of the ball and fired a perfect left-footed strike from 30 yards out to beat the keeper.
76' A redirected header from Anna Grossheim found the foot of Maria Cancio, who one-touched it into the net to put the Braves up for good.
 
TOP BRAVES
+ Redshirt senior Morgan Hill tallied her first career goal in the win.
+ Junior Maria Cancio also scored her first goal as a Brave in the victory.
+ Senior Anna Grossheim tallied a match-high eight shots, to go along with a match-high three shots on goal.
NOTABLES
+ Senior Chiara Coppin recorded two saves, making it the 23rd time in the last 26 appearances the netminder has allowed one or fewer goals.
+ The Black & Gold took 15 shots as a team, while only allowing four shots by Lees-McRae.
   
UP NEXT
The Braves will continue Conference Carolinas play on Tuesday, September 19 as they head to Belmont to take on Belmont Abbey. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Alumni Field.
