Soccer Rallies To Force Tie Against Mount Olive

PEMBROKE – Ilaya Bigford's goal in the 89th minute completed a second half comeback to force a 3-3 tie between UNC Pembroke (3-3-1, 2-1-1 CC) and Mount Olive (0-2-4, 0-1-2 CC) Saturday afternoon at LREMC Stadium. The Braves found themselves down 3-1 after a Mount Olive goal in the 68th minute, but a quick answer from Mercy Bell and Bigford's equalizer led to the final result.

Anna Grossheim recorded a goal and an assist, while Bea Vazquez got the assist on the final goal for the Braves.

Saturday's result took the all-time series to 11-4-2 in favor of the Braves. 

 
SCORING SUMMARY
12' Mount Olive's Tianna Hill played a ball to Makenna Copley, who fired a perfect strike from the corner of the box to put the Trojans ahead.
25' A foul in the box on Ashleigh Harris by the Trojans goalkeeper led to a PK from Anna Grossheim, who was successful on a perfectly placed penalty to knot the score at 1-1.
32' A Mount Olive service into the box found the foot of Olivia Womack, who then found the back of the net to give the lead back to the Trojans.
68' The Braves failed to clear a Mount Olive corner kick, eventually finding the foot of Copley, who put it home to make it 3-1 Mount Olive.
68' UNCP wasted no time as they started their comeback, as Anna Grossheim played a perfect ball to Mercy Bell in the center of the box, who one touched it past the goalkeeper to cut the deficit to one.
89' Bea Vazquez's corner kick snuck through the keeper and found Ilaya Bigford, who found the back of the net past a Mount Olive defender to close out the match's scoring.
 
TOP BRAVES
+ Senior Anna Grossheim had a match-high eight shots, with four on goal, to go along with her 28th career goal and 26th career assist.
+ Sophomore Mercy Bell recorded five shots, with four on goal, and notched her eighth goal of the season and 17th of her career.
+ Redshirt sophomore Bea Vazquez recorded her second assist in as many games, giving her three on the season.
NOTABLES
+ The Braves tallied 27 shots, good for second most in a match this season.
+ Nine of the Braves eleven starters played the full 90 minutes, the most of any match so far.
   
UP NEXT
UNCP will be back in action Wednesday, September 27, as they host conference foe Barton for Military Appreciation Night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Lumbee River EMC Stadium.
