Football Has Big Offensive Day, Knocks Off Wheeling

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke football team registered 503 offensive yards with six touchdowns to help fuel a 41-20 victory over Wheeling on Saturday afternoon at Grace P. Johnson Stadium.
 
The dominating performance for the Braves (3-2, 2-2 MEC) marked the second consecutive victory of the season, and helped the Black & Gold improve to 3-0 all-time against Wheeling. The setback for the Cardinals (3-2, 2-2 MEC) snapped a two-game winning streak and fall to 1-1 when playing on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
UNC Pembroke's defense forced Wheeling to a three-and-out on their opening drive and UNCP started their offensive drive on their own 34-yard line. The Braves marched down the field and picked up key completions to Sincere Baines and Sam Dunn to put the Black & Gold in scoring territory. Colin Johnson found Jayden Smith from four yards out for the first score of the game. UNCP 6, WU 0
 
Landon Lutz completed a pass to Tre Holloway for a gain of 15 yards for a Cardinals first down. Tre'Ron Fullerton rushed up the middle for a 25-yard gain followed by a Tre Holloway run of 16 yards to get the Wheeling offense going. Raydarius Freeman and Jamarion Darough teamed up to sack Jamir Dismukes for a loss of six yards and forced the Cardinals to a 45-yard field goal. UNCP 6, WU 3
2ND QUARTER
Wheeling forced a UNC Pembroke fumble to put the Cardinals in great field position. Landon Lutz connected with Tre Holloway for a 12-yard gain. Eli Young ran the ball on back-to-back plays to get to the UNCP 15, before Landon Lutz found Jermawn Ford in the back of the endzone for a Wheeling touchdown. UNCP 6, WU 10
 
The Cardinals intercepted a pass to get the ball back, but failed to convert on the fourth down play at the UNCP 23 to give the ball back to the Braves. Sincere Baines split the defense and rushed for a gain of 19 yards, followed by a Colin Johnson completion to Trey Dixon for an additional 16 yards. The Braves kept the offense moving with an 11-yard run from JaQuan Kelly, but a 32-yard touchdown pass to Trey Dixon put the Black & Gold back on top. UNCP 13, WU 10
 
Wheeling got the ball back after picking off another UNC Pembroke pass, but had to settle for a 21-yard field goal from Joao Lima to end the half. UNCP 13, WU 13
3RD QUARTER
Colin Johnson connected with Trey Dixon on the first play of the half for a 75-yard touchdown to give the Braves the lead. UNCP 20, WU 13
 
Landon Lutz completed a pass to Jermaine Earl for a gain of 24 yards. Earl caught another pass, this time for 12 yards, to get Wheeling to the UNCP 17-yard line. Lutz found the hands of DaeDae Drummer for a 13-yard touchdown. UNCP 20, WU 20
 
Colin Johnson rushed on consecutive plays for a total of 19 yards followed by a Sincere Baines three-yard rush to get to the UNCP 48-yard line. Johnson rushed up the middle through the defense for a gain of 20 yards, and then connected with Trey Dixon for an 18-yard touchdown. UNCP 27, WU 20
 
Wheeling started to drive on offense, but Sean Hill forced and recovered a fumble to get the offense back on the field for the Braves. Colin Johnson rushed to the left for a gain of 18 yards and then tacked on a gain of 17 yards with a rush up the middle. Johnson connected with Sincere Baines for an additional 16 yards and then found a wide open Malik Tobias for a 25-yard touchdown. UNCP 34, WU 20
4TH QUARTER
Colin Johnson completed a deep pass to Trey Dixon for a 73-yard touchdown to start the fourth quarter. UNCP 41, WU 20
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Trey Dixon tallied 240 yards on seven receptions, highlighted by a 75-yard catch. Dixon caught four touchdowns, which broke a school record. The Gibson native also broke the school record for receiving yards with his 240 yard day. 
+ Colin Johnson finished the day with 334 passing yards and six touchdowns. The redshirt junior completed 17 of his 28 passing attempts and added 94 rushing yards. Johnson matched a school record set by Luke Charles for passing touchdowns.
+ Jordan Gregg finished with a team-best 10 tackles and logged an interception. Justin Foreman registered six solo tackles and two assists, while also breaking up a pass and intercepting a pass for a gain of 12 yards. Sean Hill picked up seven tackles, while also recording 1.5 tackles for a loss of eight yards, one fumble recovery, and a sack for a loss of four yards. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke logged 58 plays for 503 yards on offense, while Wheeling ran 87 plays and was limited to 389 yards. 
+ The Black & Gold's defense held the Cardinals to just 1-for-5 on fourth down attempts. The defense also held Wheeling to its second-lowest scoring performance of the season.
+ UNCP has now won three of its first five contests for the first time since 2016.
UP NEXT
The Braves will skip town next weekend and trek to Maryland to face Frostburg State (3-1, 2-1 MEC). Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Bobcat Stadium in Frostburg, Md.
