Second Half Surge Helps Women’s Basketball By Barton

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team shot 61.1 percent from the field in the third quarter on the way to a 76-45 victory against visiting Barton on Wednesday at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The Braves (11-5, 6-1 CC) improve to 7-1 when playing at home this season and have won the last three meetings with Barton. The Bulldogs (4-12, 3-4 CC) have now lost their last three games and fall to 3-8 when playing on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Barton jumped out to an early 9-0 lead after a layup from Skylar Quillet just two minutes into the opening period. UNC Pembroke trimmed its deficit back to 11-7 with a triple from the top of the key from Alcenia Purnell at the 4:42 mark, but the Bulldogs pushed their lead out to 13-7 with a layup with 3:32 left to play in the quarter. UNCP outscored Barton 6-2 to finish the period, but Barton held a slight 15-13 lead heading into the second quarter.
2ND QUARTER
A fast break layup from Kalaya Hall knotted the score at 15 apiece, but a three pointer from Lauren Walker cushioned the Bulldogs lead 18-15 with 7:25 left to play in the half. The Braves shot 46.7 percent from the field and took their first lead of the evening, 21-20, with a jumper in the paint from Zaria Clark halfway through the frame. UNCP put together a 7-0 run to end the half and hold a 28-24 lead as the teams headed into the locker rooms. 
3RD QUARTER
Aniah McManus canned a three pointer to open the half, but an Erial Owens jumper cut the Barton deficit back to 31-26. Kelci Adams ignited the offense with a triple to send the Braves on a 13-0 run to extend their lead out to 44-27 following a Kalaya Hall layup at the four-minute mark. The Bulldogs were limited to just 23.1-percent shooting, as UNCP closed out the period on an 11-4 run to hold a 55-31 lead heading into the final stanza.
4TH QUARTER
An old-fashioned three-point play from Kalaya Hall pushed the UNC Pembroke lead out to 60-33 with nine minutes left to play in regulation. Barton chipped away at its deficit with a trio of points, but the Braves put together a 7-0 run to lead 68-38 with 5:45 on the clock. UNCP connected on 9-of-11 of their attempts from the charity stripe in the final period and took its largest lead of the night, 76-44, with a free throw from Maya Hood with less than a minute on left to play. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Kalaya Hall finished with a team-high 17 points on an 8-for-17 shooting performance. The senior also pulled down eight rebounds, registered four steals and dished out a trio of assists.
+ Zaria Clark posted a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. The Stanley native also had four assists.
+ Alcenia Purnell added 14 points on a 4-for-8 clip from the perimeter. Hannah Russell turned in 11 points and seven rebounds. 
NOTABLES
 + UNC Pembroke shot 43.1 percent from the field and limited Barton to 32.2-percent shooting. The performance for the Bulldogs marked the worst shooting night in nine games.
+ The Braves pulled down a season-high 52 rebounds. UNCP picked up 15 second chance points on 17 offensive rebounds.
+ The Black & Gold posted a 34-28 advantage with points in the paint and also scored 18 points off of 15 turnovers. 
+ Coach John Haskins picked up his 250th coaching victory with the women's program with Wednesday's victory.
