Women's Basketball Rolls By Lees-McRae

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team picked up 33 points from its bench and limited Lees-McRae to just 16.7-percent shooting in the fourth quarter on the way to a 62-45 victory against the Bobcats on Saturday at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The Braves (12-5, 7-1 CC) have now won the last two contests against LMC and improve to 8-1 when playing in Pembroke this season. The Bobcats (1-12, 0-8 CC) have now lost their last 11 games and fall to just 1-7 when playing on the road this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Lees-McRae took what would be its largest lead of the contests, 10-7, with a three pointer from Layla Tillery halfway through the first quarter. Courtney Smith knotted the score at 10 apiece with a triple from the corner with 1:46 left in the frame, as UNCP held a 13-11 lead following a layup from Kalaya Hall to end the period.
2ND QUARTER
The Braves extended their lead out to 19-11 after back-to-back 3-pointers from Courtney Smith with 8:28 on the clock. The Bobcats worked their deficit back to 19-16 with a 5-0 scoring run, but a layup from Hannah Russell padded the UNCP lead, 21-16 with 5:27 left ot play in the half. Less-McRae's Nadiya Hairston canned a three ball to trail 21-19, but Hannah Russell scored the final four points of the half as the Braves held a 25-19 advantage as the teams headed into the locker rooms. 
3RD QUARTER
Lillian Flantos knocked down a jumper in the corner to give UNC Pembroke a 29-19 lead two minutes into the period. The Bobcats shot a game-best 60 percent from the field and chipped away at their deficit, 34-26, with a 3-pointer from Dianna Spence at the 5:11 mark. Courtney Smith drained a triple followed by an old-fashioned three-point play from Alcenia Purnell to push the UNCP lead out to 40-26 with four minutes left in the period. The Bobcats closed out the quarter on a 10-3 run, but the Braves held a 43-36 lead heading into the final stanza. 
4TH QUARTER
UNC Pembroke opened the period on a 6-0 run to push its lead out to 49-36 with just under six minutes left to play in regulation. Lees-McRae worked its deficit back to 49-39 via a Sandra Mason three pointer with 5:44 on the clock. A 13-3 run capped off with a fast break layup from Kalaya Hall gave the Braves their largest lead of the contest, 62-42 with 75 seconds left in regulation. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Kalaya Hall finished with a game-high 21 points highlighted by an 11-for-12 clip from the free throw line. The senior tallied six steals, dished out four assists and pulled down four defensive rebounds.
+ Courtney Smith turned in a 15-point showing with 4-for-6 performance from the perimeter. The Jonesboro, Ga., native also registered four rebounds. 
+ Hannah Russell recorded her first career double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke scored 22 points in transition and limited Lees-McRae to 0 fast break points.
+ The Black & Gold scored 22 points off of 20 turnovers from the Bobcats. 
+ UNCP shot 45.4 percent from the field in the second half. 
+ The Braves got to the free throw line 26 times tonight and made 20 of those attempts. Lees-McRae was limited to just 7-for-13 from the charity stripe. 
+ UNC Pembroke limited Lees-McRae to a season-low 45 points.
UP NEXT
The Braves will make the short trip down I-95 to Florence, S.C. on Wednesday for the Battle of I-95 against Francis Marion. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. inside the Smith University Center.
