Men’s Basketball Wins Battle Of I-95 At Francis Marion

FLORENCE, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team was firing on all cylinders shooting 52.5 percent from the floor on the way to a key 91-72 victory against rival Francis Marion on Wednesday evening inside the Smith University Center. 
 
The Braves (14-4, 8-1 CC) have now won their last five meetings with the Patriots when playing in Florence. The setback for the Patriots (8-9, 6-3 CC) snapped a five-game winning streak and are now 2-2 when playing at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
Francis Marion took an early 5-0 lead, but a layup from Amare Miller layup tied the score at 12 apiece just under 13-minute mark. A Bradlee Haskell triple cushioned the UNCP lead, 22-18, with nine minutes remaining in the opening half. The Patriots cut their deficit back to 22-20, but a 6-0 scoring run pushed the UNC Pembroke lead out to 28-20 with 6:26 on the clock.  A pair of Francis Marion free throws cut the score to 31-30, but a corner three from Jamarvious Jones gave UNCP a 38-31 lead with 1:08 left in the half. The Braves shot 45.2 percent from the floor during the frame and held a 40-34 lead as the teams headed into the locker rooms. 
2ND HALF
Horaces Jaques made the front end of a pair of free throws to whittle the Francis Marion deficit back to 42-39 just two minutes into the action, but UNC Pembroke went on a 9-0 run to push its lead out to 51-39 with 16:19 on the clock. The Patriots put together a 6-0 run to trim their deficit back to 59-51 with 12:41 left to play in regulation. The Braves shot 60 percent from the field and limited the Patriots to just 29-percent shooting during the half as UNCP took their largest lead of the night, 89-68 following a driving layup from Dallas Gardner with just 1:26 left on the clock.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Javonte Waverly scored a team-best 19 points on a 7-for-10 shooting performance. The junior dished out four assists and tallied three steals. 
+ Elijah Cobb nearly recorded a double-double with 16 points and eight rebounds. The redshirt junior registered a pair of blocks along with a steal and an assist. 
+ Amare Miller came off of the bench to log a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Miller was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 52.5 percent from the field and limited Francis Marion to lowest shooting percentage (35%) in the last 14 games.
+ The Black & Gold held the lead for nearly 80 percent (31:52) of Wednesday's contest.
+ UNCP posted a 46-26 advantage with points in the paint. 
+ The Braves also scored 42 points from their bench highlighted by double-figure scoring from Javonte Waverly and Amare Miller.
UP NEXT
The Braves will hit close out their road trip on Saturday when they trek to Tigerville, S.C., to face North Greenville. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m. inside Hayes Gymnasium.
