Men’s Basketball Blows By Mount Olive

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke basketball team never trailed during Wednesday's contest and picked up 45 points from its bench on the way to a 97-73 victory against visiting Mount Olive at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
 
The Braves (16-4, 10-1 CC) have won their last five contests against Mount Olive and improve to 9-1 when playing in Pembroke this season. The Trojans (5-15, 4-6 CC) have lost two out of their last three games and fall to 3-6 when playing on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
UNC Pembroke took an early 13-9 lead, but used a 13-0 run to push its lead out to 26-9 following a layup from Amare Miller at the 7:40 mark. The Braves shot a game-best 52.8 percent from the field and extended their lead out to 33-18 with a Cortez Marion-Holmes layup with five minutes left in the half. Mount Olive worked its deficit back to 38-21 with three minutes on the clock, but the Trojans were held to just 25.9-percent shooting in the opening period and trailed 47-24 as the teams headed into the locker rooms. 
2ND HALF
The Trojans started the half on a 7-2 surge to chip away at their deficit, 50-31, but the Braves answered with a 7-2 run of their own to cushion their lead, 57-33, with a Nygell Verdier layup at the 16-minute mark. UMO knocked down four 3-pointers in a row to whittle their deficit back to 63-48, but Elijah Cobb's layup extended the UNCP lead out to 69-53 with 9:37 left to play in regulation. Mount Olive cut its deficit back to 71-59 with a pair of free throws at the 7:37 mark, but UNC Pembroke would eventually take a 85-63 lead with Elijah Cobb's layup with under four minutes left in the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Nygell Verdier finished with 18 points on a 5-for-13 shooting performance. Verdier flirted with a double-double with seven rebounds, while adding a pair of assists and a block and a steal.
+ Cortez Marion-Holmes also nearly registered a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds off of the bench. 
+ Javonte Waverly and Bradlee Haskell each added a dozen points, while Elijah Cobb chipped in 10 points. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 52.5 percent from the floor and held Mount Olive to 36.2-percent shooting. It is the third time in the last five games UNCP has shot better than 50 percent from the floor. 
+ The Black & Gold held a 15-6 advantage on the offensive glass which turned into a 24-10 advantage in second chance points. 
+ UNCP took care of the ball committing a season-low eight turnovers. 
+ The 97 points marks the most points scored this season for the Braves.
+ UNC Pembroke did not trail during Wednesday's contest. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will head to Franklin Springs, Ga., for a key Conference Carolinas matchup against Emmanuel on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. inside the Shaw Athletic Center.
