Men’s Basketball Picks Up Big Win Over Converse

PEMBROKE –The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team shot a season-high 56.7 percent from the field and canned 13 triples on the way to a key 90-60 victory over visiting Converse on Saturday at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The Braves (10-3, 4-0 CC) have now won their last eight contests and improve to 7-0 when playing in Pembroke. The Valkyries (9-4 3-2 CC) have now dropped their last three games and fall to 4-3 when playing on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
UNC Pembroke used a dunk from Nygell Verdier to take an early 12-3 lead with 14:30 on the clock. An 8-0 Converse run cut the UNCP lead back to 15-14 with a three from Uzziah Dawkins with just over 11 minutes remaining in the half. Bradlee Haskell canned a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give the Braves a 19-16 lead, but the Valkyries scored the next five points to lead 21-19 at the 7:14 mark. Converse took what would be its largest lead, 27-22 with 4:22 on the clock, but the hosts closed out the half on a 10-4 run to hold a slight 32-21 advantage as the teams headed to the locker rooms. 
2ND HALF
UNCP scored the six points of the half following triples from Bradlee Haskell and Nygell Verdier, but Converse used a three of their own from CJ Jamison as UNC Pembroke held a 38-34 lead. JaJauan Carr ignited the offense with a running layup as the Braves went on a 19-0 run to lead 57-34 with 12:02 remaining in regulation. UNCP shot 63.6 percent from the field during the period and took what would be their largest lead of the night, 90-60, with a jumper from Cortez Marion-Holmes with 29 seconds remaining. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ JaJuan Carr finished with a game-best 20 points highlighted by a 4-for-6 clip from the perimeter. The junior pulled down five rebounds and had four assists as well. 
+ Bradlee Haskell finished with 19 points and was 6-for-10 from the field. Haskell had a trio of assists and rebounds while also added two steals.
+ Nygell Verdier added 15 points while Elijah Cobb had 10 points. Verdier finished with three rebounds, two blocks, and one steal, while Cobb nearly registered a double-double with eight rebounds. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot a season-best 56.7 percent from the field and limited Converse to a season-low 39.6 percent shooting performance. It was also the fewest amount of points scored for Converse this season. 
+ The Black & Gold also shot a season-high 48.1 percent from the perimeter.
+ UNCP held the lead for 84.4 percent of Saturday's contest.
+ Saturday's result marked the most points scored this season for the Braves. 
+ The Braves scored 20 points off of 15 turnovers and held a 32-18 advantage with points in the paint. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Murfreesboro, N.C., to face Chowan. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m at Bob Burke Court.
