Football Steamrolls Over West Liberty

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke football team exploded on offense with 675-yards of total offense to fuel a dominating 67-20 victory against West Liberty on Saturday at Grace P. Johnson Stadium. 
 
The Braves (2-4, 2-2 MEC) have now won their last two contests and improve to 5-1 all-time against West Liberty. The setback for the Hilltoppers (1-5, 1-3 MEC) marked the fourth straight loss to UNCP in the series and fall to 0-2 on the road this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
UNC Pembroke's defense forced West Liberty to a three and out on the opening possession of the game where the Braves took over on their own 38-yard line. Colin Johnson completed his first five passes to move the offense down the field highlighted by a 20-yard catch from Jo Hayes on the West Liberty 12-yard line. Johnson found and open Que Kennedy for Kennedy's first collegiate touchdown. UNCP 6, WLU 0

Laden Ford broke up a pass on third down and forced the Hilltoppers to punt where UNCP took over on their own 32-yard line. JaQuan Kelly rushed down the left side for a gain of 19-yards, followed by a 10-yard completion from Colin Johnson to Que Kennedy. Johnson found an open JaQuan Albright for a gain of 18-yards which set Albright up for a rush down the right side of the field for an additional 14 yards. Kelly broke free on the left side for a gain of seven yards before he ran it up the middle for a one-yard touchdown. UNCP 13, WLU 0
2ND QUARTER
Levi Gullion completed a 41-yard pass to Ben Turner at the end of the first quarter to spark the West Liberty offense leading into the second quarter. Hunter Patterson rushed to the right for 15 yards before Levi Gullion completed a 14-yard pass to Marquez Hurst for the first Hilltoppers touchdown. UNCP 13, WLU 7
 

Colin Johnson completed a pass to Que Kennedy for a 62-yard touchdown. UNCP 20, WLU 7
 
Carlo Thompson broke up a pass as West Liberty turned the ball over on downs where UNCP started the drive on the West Liberty 41-yard line. Colin Johnson completed a pass to an open Josh Jenkins in the middle of the field, before Johnson and Jenkins connected again for a 33-yard touchdown. UNCP 27, WLU 7
 
The Hilltoppers were held to another three and out possession where the Black & Gold took over on their own 20-yard line. Colin Johnson completed a short pass to Josh Jenkins for a gain of 12 yards followed by a 32-yard gain on another Johnson pass completion to Jenkins. Jo Hayes broke free of the defense and caught a pass from Johnson for a 40-yard touchdown. UNCP 33, WLU 7

Levi Gullion threw a pass down the sideline to Ben Turner who broke free from a pair of UNCP defenders for a 60-yard touchdown. UNCP 33, WLU 14

3RD QUARTER
Jaylen Smith returned the opening kickoff of the second half for 26-yards as the UNCP offense started their drive on their own 45-yard line. Colin Johnson completed a pass for Que Kennedy for a gain of 16-yards, then found Kennedy again for a gain of 14 yards. Johnson connected with an open JaQuan Albright for 16 more yards before Johnson's short pass to the left to Jo Hayes for a nine-yard touchdown. UNCP 40, WLU 14
 
Evan Powell intercepted a Levi Gullion pass on the West Liberty 49-yard line where the Braves would takeover. Colin Johnson completed a short pass to Que Kennedy for a gain of eight yards followed by a gain of 15-yards after Johnson connected with Jayden Smith. Josh Jenkins caught a short pass on the right side from Johnson for a 21-yard touchdown. UNCP 47, WLU 14
4TH QUARTER
UNCP started the drive at the end of the third quarter which was highlighted by a 31-yard gain from Jayden Smith on a pass completion from Colin Johnson. Johnson found an open Jo Hayes for a deep 37-yard pass completion where Hayes was downed at the one-yard line. Hayes ran the ball in on the left side on the next play for a UNCP touchdown. UNCP 54, WLU 14
 
Levi Gullion was sacked for a loss of 12 yards where he fumbled, and Laden Ford recovered it to start the UNC Pembroke drive on their own 15-yard line. Keshawn Jefferson ran the ball for the first three plays including a 32-yard gain down the left side. Colin Johnson completed a pass to Jefferson for a gain of 26-yards as JaQuan Albright caught a short pass from Johnson for a touchdown. UNCP 60, WLU 14
 
Levi Gullion was intercepted by Scott Walker to give the Braves the ball at the 50-yard line. Keshawn Jefferson rushed up the middle for a gain of 12-yards followed by an eight-yard run from Jefferson. Tre Robinson rushed the left for 16 more yards before he broke free on the right side for eight yards. Robinson completed a short pass to EJ Gatling in the endzone for the final UNCP touchdown. UNCP 67, WLU 14
 

Ti'Lan McGee ran the ball on the first five plays of the drive for a gain of 44 total yards. Alex Dunlevy completed a deep pass for a 25-yard touchdown to Keese Demery, Sr. as time expired. UNCP 67, WLU 20
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Colin Johnson completed 29 passes for 514 yards and seven touchdowns. Johnson broke his own school record for most passing touchdowns in a single game and broke the school record for most passing yards in a game as well. 
+ Que Kennedy caught eight passes for a total of 130 yards. The true freshman also registered a pair of touchdowns. 
+ D'Marcus Harrington finished with seven total tackles, six of which were solo tackles. The Hamlet native had one tackles for a loss of three yards, one sack for a loss of three yards, broke up two passes and intercepted one pass. 
+ Marquis Raspberry finished with five tackles, four of which were solo and 1.5 tackles for a loss of 17 yards. The redshirt junior also forced one fumble as well.  
NOTABLES
+ The Braves finished the game with 675 total offensive yards. The explosive offensive day broke a school record for most offensive yards in a game, which was 668 in 2011.
+ The Black & Gold also scored 10 touchdowns, which also broke a school record for most touchdowns as a team in a single game.
+ UNCP also set the school record for most touchdown passes in a single game with eight, seven of which were thrown by Colin Johnson

The Braves will hit the road to West Virginia on Saturday to lock horns with Fairmont State. Kickoff is set for noon at Duvall-Rosier Field in Fairmont, West Virginia.
