No. 22 Women’s Basketball Rattles Fayetteville State

PEMBROKE – The 22nd-ranked UNC Pembroke women's basketball team shot 43.1-percent from the field and had three players score in double figures on the way to a 63-56 victory against Fayetteville State on Wednesday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The victory for the Braves (4-1) snapped a three-game skid against Fayetteville State and push their win streak out the three games. The Broncos (2-3) have now lost their last three contests. 





 
THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Fayetteville State took what would be its largest lead of the night, 5-3, with a three from Talia Trotter just a minute into the action. UNC Pembroke put together a 10-2 run to lead 13-7 capped off with a layup from Zaria Clark with 3:17 remaining in the opening period. UNCP shot 53.3 percent from the floor and closed out the quarter on a 7-2 surge to lead 20-9.
2ND QUARTER
The Broncos worked their deficit back to 25-17 with a triple from Talia Trotter, but the Braves used 3-pointers from Kelci Adams and Natalie Evington and a bucket from Hannah Russell to push the hosts lead out to 33-17 with 2:38 left in the half. FSU outscored UNCP 8-3 in the final minutes of the quarter, but the Braves held a 36-25 advantage as the teams headed into the locker room. 
3RD QUARTER
The Braves took their largest lead of the night, 47-31, with a jumper from Hannah Russell six minutes into the quarter. Fayetteville State scored the next five points to work its deficit back to 47-36, but UNCP shot 50-percent from the floor during the period and closed out the quarter on an 8-4 surge capped off with a layup from Anastasia Sinclair at the buzzer to lead 55-40 heading into the final stanza. 
4TH QUARTER
The Broncos scored the first six points of the quarter, but Anastasia Sinclair's jumper stopped the run and pushed the UNCP out to 57-46 with 6:50 remaining in regulation. FSU continued to work their deficit back to 59-54 following an 8-2 surge, but UNCP scored four of the final six points of the contest to secure the win. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Kelci Adams matched a career-high with 23 points highlighted by a 7-for-10 showing from the perimeter, which matches the single-game record set by Adams last season. The Fort Mill, S.C., native posted a double-double with 12 rebounds as well. 
+ Stella Mollica matched a single-game record with 13 assists. The senior added four points and three boards.
+ Hannah Russell finished the night with 12 points via a 6-for-10 shooting performance in 28 minutes of work. 
+ Anastasia Sinclair chipped in ten points and grabbed six rebounds. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 43.1 percent from the floor. The Black & Gold have shot at least 40 percent from the floor in four of the five games this season. 
+ The Braves limited Fayetteville State to just 38.7-percent shooting and 19-percent shooting from the perimeter.  
+ Wednesday's victory marked the first win against FSU in the last four meetings. 
+ The 4-1 start marks the best start to the season for the program since a 4-1 during the 2016-17 season.

The Braves will begin Conference Carolinas play on Saturday when they welcome Erskine to town for Social Media Day. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
