Men’s Basketball Tops Erskine To Start Conference Play

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team shot 47.9 percent from the floor and picked up 44 points from its bench on the way to a 94-64 victory against Erskine for the first conference game of the season on Saturday at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The Braves (3-4, 1-0 CC) have now won the last two games and picked up their seventh-straight victory against Erskine. The Flying Fleet (2-5, 0-1 CC) have now lost two out of their last three games and fall to 1-5 when playing in Pembroke.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
Bradlee Haskell canned a 3-pointer to give UNC Pembroke a slight 11-10 lead, but Erskine's Grant Lovette converted on an old-fashioned three-point play to give the Flying Fleet their largest lead of the contest, 15-13, with 11:41 remaining in the opening half. Ant Abraham sparked the Braves on a 12-0 run to give the hosts a 26-15 lead at the 8:40 mark, before Erskine scored the next two buckets to trail 26-19. UNCP shot 42.8 percent from the field during the period and closed out the half on a 17-0 run to send the teams to the locker rooms with the Braves leading 43-19. 
2ND HALF
The Braves scored the first eight points of the half to push their lead out to 50-19 with a layup from Joe'l Pettiford with 17:36 on the clock. The Flying Fleet chipped away at their deficit, 50-26, with a 7-0 surge, but UNCP put together a 12-2 run to take its largest lead of the night, 61-28, following a jumper from Steven Lassister at the 14-minute mark. Erskine cut its deficit down to 64-45 with nine minutes on the clock, but the Braves shot 52.7 percent from the floor and never relinquished the lead.  
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Bradlee Haskell finished with a game-high 17 points on a 4-for-11 outing. The senior pulled down two rebounds and dished out a trio of assists. 
+ Dallas Gardner added 11 points on a 3-for-4 shooting performance in 14 minutes of work. 
+ Freshman Quay Watson came off of the bench to turn in a career-high 11 points following a 4-for-9 clip from the field. The newcomer pulled down six rebounds, had six assists and a pair of steals. 
+ Joe' Pettiford nearly registered a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds. Newcomer Jonathan Kurtas also flirted with a double-double following a seven-point and seven rebound night.  
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 47.9 percent from the floor. 
+ The Black & Gold picked up 44 points from its bench. All players who registered minutes scored during Saturday's victory. 
+ The Braves posted a 51-27 advantage in rebounds. 
+ UNCP scored 18 points in transition and 19 second chance points. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will hit the road on Tuesday for a conference match up with Belmont Abbey. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. inside the Wheeler Center.
