Men’s Basketball Falls To USC Aiken In Home Opener

PEMBROKE – USC Aiken shot 56.7 percent from the field and scored 42 points in the paint to help the Pacers to a 101-87 victory over the UNC Pembroke men's basketball team on Friday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 

The setback for the Braves (0-3) marked the first loss to USC Aiken in the last four contests. The Pacers (1-0) had three players score in double-figures highlighted by Jalen McCoy's 34-point performance.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
UNC Pembroke established an early 13-8 lead following a pair of free throws form Dallas Gardner five minutes into the contest. USC Aiken used a 10-1 run capped off by a triple from Rafael Rubel to lead 18-14 with 12:21 remaining in the opening period. A three from Quay Watson at the nine-minute mark gave the Braves a slight 22-21 advantage, but the Pacers used another 10-1 surge to push their lead out to 31-23 with seven minutes on the clock. USC Aiken's Jalen McCoy knocked down a three as time expired to send the teams to the locker room with the Pacers leading 52-38. 
2ND HALF
Both teams traded baskets through the first minutes of the half, but back-to-back 3-pointers from Ant Abraham cut the UNCP deficit back to 66-60 with 13:12 left to play in regulation. USC Aiken would take its largest lead of the night, 84-67, with a layup from Simeon German to finish off an 18-7 scoring run with 8:13 on the clock. JaJuan Carr canned a triple to work the UNCP deficit back to 93-83, but USC Aiken shot 60 percent from the floor during the half and closed out the game on an 8-4 run. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Dallas Gardner scored a career-high 20 points highlighted by a 16-for-17 showing from the free throw line. The sophomore had four rebounds, three steals and two assists in 25 minutes of action. 
+ JaJuan Carr added 17 points on a 4-for-5 clip from the perimeter. The Burgaw native pulled down five defensive rebounds and had a pair of assists and one steal. 
+ Bradlee Haskell finished with 13 points in 34 minutes of work. The senior dished out a pair of assists and had one steal. 
NOTABLES
+ The Black & Gold scored 21 second chance points while USC Aiken was limited to just 12 second chance points. 
+ All nine players that saw action scored for UNCP. 
+ The Pacers scored 25 points off of 16 UNC Pembroke turnovers.
+ It was the first time since 2017 that the Braves have given up 100 or more points. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will travel to Greenwood, S.C. on Sunday for a non-conference contest at Lander. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. inside Horne Arena.
