Men's Basketball Has Hot Hand, Downs Erskine

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team shot a season-high 61.7 percent from the floor and had 13 different players score to highlight an 88-34 victory against Erskine on Saturday at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 

The Braves (17-5, 11-2 CC) improve to 10-1 when playing in Pembroke this season and have now won the last six meetings against Erskine. The Flying Fleet (4-18, 0-14 CC) have lost their last two contests and are 1-11 when playing on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
UNC Pembroke started the half on an 18-2 run capped off with a pair of free throws from Nygel Verdier with 14:39 on the clock in the opening period. Erskine cut its deficit back to 20-8 with an old-fashioned three-point play from Connor Stark, but the Braves extended their lead out to 38-13 following a jumper from Javonte Waverly with just under three minutes left in the half. UNCP shot 56.2 percent from the field and held a commanding 41-17 lead heading into the locker room.
2ND HALF
The Braves shot a game-high 67.8 percent from the field and extended their lead out to 48-17 after scoring the first seven points of the frame. The Flying Fleet's Larry Mitchell knocked down a jumper in a paint at the 11-minute mark, but the Braves padded their lead, 68-29 with a jumper from Will Gray with seven minutes left in regulation. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Dallas Gardner finished with a game-high 16 points on a 7-for-10 shooting night. The newcomer grabbed three rebounds and had a pair of steals. 
+ Elijah Cobb during in 15 points on a perfect 6-for-6 shooting outing. The redshirt junior pulled down five rebounds. 
+ Nygell Verdier and Bradlee Haskell each added 10 points. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot a season-high 61.7 percent from the floor during Saturday's victory.
+ The Black & Gold tallied 41 points from its bench and 50 points inside the paint. 
+ The Braves picked up 27 points off of 19 Erskine turnovers.  
+ UNCP got scoring production from 13 different players on Saturday including four scoring in double-figures. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will hit the road on Thursday when they travel to Wilson to face Barton. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. inside the Wilson Gymnasium.
