Men’s Basketball Too Much For Francis Marion In Battle Of I-95

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team established the lead just three minutes into the action and never relinquished the lead on the way to a dominating 89-65 victory against Francis Marion on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The Braves (19-5, 13-2 CC) have now won their last three contests and have been victorious in eight of the last nine meetings with Francis Marion. The setback for the Patriots (12-11, 10-5 CC) snapped a three-game winning streak and fall to 8-7 when playing on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
Francis Marion took its largest lead of the contest, 5-3, following a dunk from Marlow Gilmore Jr. less than two minutes into the action. UNC Pembroke used a 12-3 capped off with an old-fashioned three-point play from JaJuan Carr to hold a 15-8 lead at the 12-1/2-minute mark. The Patriots tried to chip away at their deficit, 15-12, but a Josh Berenbaum three capped off a 7-0 run to pad the Braves lead 22-12. UNCP shot 51.6 percent from the field and canned six 3-pointers during the half and held a 43-31 lead as the teams headed into the locker rooms. 
2ND HALF
UNC Pembroke extended its lead out to 50-31 after scoring the first seven points of the half. The hosts continued to add to their lead, 62-37, after a pair of Bradlee Haskell free throws with just over 12-minutes remaining in regulation. Francis Marion whittled away at its deficit, 65-45, with a running layup from Marlow Gilmore Jr., but the Braves would go on to take their largest lead of the contest, 79-52 with a three ball from Bradlee Haskell with 3:45 on the clock. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Bradlee Haskell finished with 17 points on a 4-for-12 shooting performance. Haskell dished out seven assists, had four steals, three blocks, and a pair of rebounds in 32 minutes of work.
+ Amare Miller came off of the bench to chip in 13 points. Miller nearly registered a double-double with seven rebounds.
+ Javonte Waverly provided a spark off of the bench adding 13 points highlighted by a 3-for-5 clip from the perimeter. The junior had two rebounds, along with a steal and an assist. 
+ Elijah Cobb and Nygell Verdier each pulled down seven rebounds. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 46.0 percent from the field and limited Francis Marion to just 37.5-percent shooting. The shooting performance for the Patriots marked the worst offensive night in the last six games. 
+ The Braves scored 41 points from its bench, highlighted by 13 points apiece from Javonte Waverly and Amare Miller.
+ The Black & Gold tallied 10 3-pointers while holding FMU to just three baskets from the perimeter. It matched a season-low of triples this season for the Patriots. 
+ UNCP held the lead for 94 percent of Saturday's contest. 
+ Saturday's victory marked the 75th victory at UNCP for head coach Drew Richards.  
UP NEXT
The Braves will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to face Mount Olive. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. inside Kornegay Arena.
