Braves Use Long Ball To Roll Past Mavericks

PEMBROKE – 9th-ranked UNC Pembroke took a commanding 8-2 lead after five complete, before Mercy cut the deficit to one heading to the bottom of the eighth. The Braves responded with four runs, including blasts from Will Hood and Isaias Villarreal to put the game away.

Six UNCP pitchers combined to strike out ten Mercy hitters on the day.

The Braves (11-0) moved to 1-1 in the series with the Mavericks (1-4), and now start 11-0 for the first time since 2015.
 
UNCP will be back in action Friday, February 23, as they hit the road for Florence, S.C. to open Conference Carolinas play against Francis Marion. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.

KEY INNINGS
BOT 4 Facing a 2-1 deficit, Joey Rezek struck for a solo blast to knot the score at 2. Michael Dolberry II would continue his hot streak, with a 2-run no doubter to left to make it 4-2 Braves.
BOT 5 Kody O'Connor's RBI single would score Spencer Faulkner, before Rezek went big fly again, this time a 3-run knock to stretch the lead to 8-2.
TOP 8 A Joseph Gonzalez RBI single made it 8-3, before Brandon Nolasco would cut it to 8-7 with a grand slam.
BOT 8 UNCP struck right back, as Chase Hudson worked a walk, while Will Hood joined the home run party with a 2-run bomb to left. Isaias Villarreal followed by going back-to-back with a solo blast. Rezek finished off his productive day with a sac fly to make it 12-7 Braves.
