DIVISION CHAMPS! Women’s Basketball Downs Chowan For Title

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team held the lead for 96.7-percent of Wednesday's contest and used 27 points from its bench on the way to a 69-62 victory against Chowan in the regular season finale at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.  
 
The victory for the Braves (21-7, 15-3 CC) marks the 12th consecutive home victory this season and the most wins at home since the 1991-92 season. The setback for the Hawks (13-9, 13-5 CC) snapped a five-game winning streak and fall to 5-7 when playing on the road this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Chowan what would be its largest lead of the night, 9-8, after a 3-pointer from Tynasia Bunting, but a 10-0 UNC Pembroke run capped off with a jumper from Lillian Flantos gave the Braves an 18-9 lead with 1:31 on the clock. The Hawks scored the final four of the quarter, but trailed 18-13 heading into the second period.
2ND QUARTER
The Black & Gold pushed their lead out to 23-10 with a triple from Kelci Adams just two minutes into the frame. Chowan trimmed its deficit back to 27-16 with a jumper from Sydney Roberts with just over two minutes left in the half, but a Courtney Smith jumper at the buzzer sent the teams to the locker rooms with UNCP leading 34-21. 
3RD QUARTER
Chowan scored the first four points of the half, but a Lillian Flantos layup pushed the UNCP lead out to 36-25 with 8:31 on the clock. Tynasia Bunting canned a 3-pointer to cut the Hawks deficit back to 40-34 with three minutes on the clock, but the hosts outscored Chowan 10-7 to hold a 50-41 advantage heading into the final stanza.
4TH QUARTER
A three-pointer from Lillian Flantos followed by a running layup by Aniah McManus gave UNC Pembroke its largest lead of the night, 55-41 with 8:17 remaining in regulation. A pair of Chowan free throws trimmed the Hawks deficit back to 59-50, but Kelci Adams padded the UNCP lead, 62-50, with a triple from the top of the key halfway through the period. The hosts made 7-of-8 of their attempts from the charity stripe during the quarter to help fuel the victory. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Kelci Adams finished with a team-high 17 points on a 6-for-13 shooting clip. The Fort Mill, S.C., native nearly registered a double-double with eight rebounds in 33 minutes of work.
+ Courtney Smith added 15 points following a 6-for-8 showing from the free throw line. The senior grabbed five rebounds along with an assist and a steal.
+ Kalaya Hall chipped in 11 points along with four rebounds, a pair of assists, and a block and a steal.
+ Lillian Flantos turned in nine points ,give rebounds, and a team-high four steals in 35 minutes of action. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 36.8 percent from the floor and finished 19-for-24 from the free throw line.
+ The Black & Gold scored 18 points off of 20 Chowan turnovers.
+ The Braves have won their last 12 contests at home. UNCP finishes the season with a 13-1 record when playing in Pembroke, which marks the most victories since the 1991-92 season where the team finished with a 13-4 home record. 
+ Chowan attempted 23 free throws but made good on 12 of those attempts. 
UP NEXT
The Braves earned the top seed of the Conference Carolinas Tournament and will advance to the semifinals on Saturday, March 9. The tournament will be played at the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C.
