Women's Basketball Knocks Off Barton, Punches Ticket To Tournament Finals

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team used a strong performance from the free throw line and committed just nine turnovers on the way to a 63-56 victory over Barton in the Conference Carolinas Tournament semifinals on Saturday at the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. 
 
The Braves (22-7) have now won their last two games and advance to the Conference Carolinas tournament finals on Sunday against Belmont Abbey. The setback for the Bulldogs (11-20) snapped a four-game winning streak and marks their fifth straight loss to UNCP.
 
UNC Pembroke will now face Belmont Abbey in the Conference Carolinas Tournament finals on Sunday. Sunday will be the 17th meeting between the two teams, with UNCP leading 10-6. However, BAC defeated the Braves 37-36 on Jan. 13 earlier this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Barton took what would be its largest lead of the night, 10-6, with a triple from Lauren Walker, but a Kalaya Hall layup and a three from Courtney Smith gave UNC Pembroke an 11-10 advantage with 3:41 left in the opening period. Both teams shot 40 percent from the floor, as the score was locked at 17 after the Malea Garrison knocked down a triple as time expired. 
2ND QUARTER
UNCP scored the first five points of the quarter to lead 22-17 just two minutes into action following a Kalaya Hall layup and a three from Lillian Flantos. The Bulldogs put together a 5-0 run of their own to knot the score at 24 apiece, but a Courtney Smith layup pushed the Braves out in front by a basket. Erial Owens laid in a bucket to put BC ahead 29-28 with 65 seconds remaining in the half, but a layup from Aniah McManus and Courtney Smith sent the teams to the locker rooms with the Braves holding a 32-29 advantage.
3RD QUARTER
Nyla Powell tied the game at 36 with a running layup halfway through the quarter. A 9-0 UNC Pembroke run gave the Braves their largest lead of the night, 45-37, following a triple from Courtney Smith with two minutes left in the period. Lauren Mingo answered with a 3-pointer, as Kalaya Hall's layup put the Black & Gold ahead 47-40 heading into the final stanza.  
4TH QUARTER
Barton scored the first nine points of the period and took a 49-47 lead with a fast break layup from Lauren Mingo with five minutes remaining in regulation. Cierra Revelle knocked down a three from the corner to trim the Barton deficit back to 56-54 with 54 seconds on the clock, but UNCP closed out the game on a 7-2 run to fuel the outcome. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Kalaya Hall finished with a game-high 25 points and was 11-for-15 from the charity stripe. The senior broke the school record for most frees throws made in a single season and added four steals.
+ Courtney Smith came off of the bench to add 12 points and three rebounds in 21 minutes of work. 
+ Zaria Clark posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in 37 minutes of action. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 33.9 percent from the floor and was 20-for-25 from the free throw line. 
+ The Braves scored 21 points from Barton's 16 turnovers. UNCP held a 22-18 advantage with points in the paint. 
+ The Black & Gold finished 20-for-25 from the free throw line as Barton was just 6-for-10. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will battle Belmont Abbey in the Conference Carolinas Tournament championship on Sunday. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
