BACK-2-BACK! Women’s Basketball Rattles Belmont Abbey For Title

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team knocked down a program-best 15 3-pointers to help fuel a 72-51 victory against Belmont Abbey on Sunday in the Conference Carolinas Tournament championship at the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
 
The Braves have now defeated the Crusaders the last two seasons in the conference finals and outscored BAC 22-9 in the fourth quarter. 



 
THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Belmont Abbey took what would be its largest lead of the night, 13-4 at the 3:14 mark in the opening period. UNC Pembroke closed out the half on a 12-0 run fueled by four 3-pointers to hold a 16-13 lead after the quarter.
2ND QUARTER
Belmont Abbey used a 6-3 surge to lead 26-23 halfway through the second quarter. The Braves shot 45.5 percent from the floor during the period, and used a triple from Aniah McManus and a fast break from Kalaya Hall to hold a slight 30-28 lead as the teams headed into the locker rooms. 
3RD QUARTER
The Black & Gold canned four 3-pointers during the stanza and took a 43-38 lead from Kelci Adams to extend their lead out to 43-38 with 5:23 on the clock. Peyton Nation's layup cut the Belmont Abbey deficit back to 45-42 with 1:14 on the clock, but a Lillian Flantos three ball and a fast break layup from Kalaya Hall cushioned the UNC Pembroke lead, 50-42, heading into the final period. 
4TH QUARTER
The Braves started the quarter on a 10-4 run capped off with a Lillian Flantos jumper to hold a 60-46 lead with 4:29 remaining in regulation. The Black & Gold shot a game-best 71.4 percent from the floor, and took their largest lead of the night, 72-51, after a triple from Kelci Adams with 50 seconds on the clock. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Kalaya Hall finished with a game-best 25 points on a 8-for-13 shooting clip. The senior nearly registered a double-double with eight rebounds in 36 minutes of work.
+ Kelci Adams logged 14 points and was 4-for-8 from the perimeter. The junior now is the single season record holder for most three's in a season. 
+ Lillian Flantos turned in 10 points following a 4-for-7performance, while pulling down four rebounds. 
NOTABLES
+ Kalaya Hall was named Tournament Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive season. Hall becomes the first player since LaShonda Chiles (2005-06) to be named MVP in consecutive seasons. 
+ Kelci Adams and Courtney Smith were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
+ The Black & Gold shot 51.1 percent from the floor and 55.6 percent from the perimeter. 
+ UNCP held the lead for 55.7 percent of Sunday's contest. 
UP NEXT
The Braves earned the automatic qualifier bid to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season. The Black & Gold earned the eigth seed and will play Catawba.
