Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader, Takes Series Over #2 North Greenville

PEMBROKE – UNC Pembroke's offense came alive on the way to cruising to a 13-4 win in Game 1 of the doubleheader, and then used a sterling relief effort from Chase Jernigan in the rubber match to take a 6-3 win and the series from the 2nd-ranked North Greenville Crusaders in Conference Carolinas action Saturday at Sammy Cox Field.
 
Kody O'Connor homered twice in Game 1, while Jernigan went the final four innings of the series finale, allowing just two hits and no runs, to go along with six punchouts to slam the door.
 
The doubleheader sweep marked the first time in three tries the Braves (20-5, 7-5 CC) have taken a series from the Crusaders (21-6, 9-3 CC) since joining Conference Carolinas.

The Black & Gold will be back in action Tuesday, March 19 as they head to Hardeeville, S.C. to take on USC Beaufort in a non-conference matchup. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 1 Andrew Jenner worked a walk and Joey Rezek was hit by a pitch, setting up Kody O'Connor's 3-run blast to give the Braves a quick 3-0 lead.
BOT 2 Will Hood led off the frame with a single, Ashton Donathan kept it going with a single of his own, before Carlos Amezquita singled to score Hood. Jenner's opposite-field double would score Donathan, while Joey Rezek added a 2-RBI single to stretch the lead to 7-2. A first and third double steal would score Rezek, before Blake Hinson capped off the six-run inning with an RBI single to make it 9-2 and put the game away.
BOT 6 O'Connor would jog around the bases once more on his second blast of the day to make it 13-4.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
BOT 3 Andrew Jenner worked a walk, followed by a Joey Rezek single. Kody O'Connor would bring them both home on a 2-run double to get the Braves on the board first. O'Connor would then move to third on a wild pitch before scoring on another wild pitch to make it 3-0 UNCP.
TOP 4 NGU's David Lewis got the Crusaders on the board with a solo shot, before Bryce Roddey added an RBI single to cut the UNCP lead to 3-2.
BOT 4 Michael Dolberry laced a 2-out double to left center, and would come around to score on Amezquita's RBI double to make it 4-2.
BOT 6 Jake Bradley worked a leadoff walk and would eventually come around to score on Amezquita's 2-out infield single to make it a 5-3 lead.
