Men’s Basketball Downs Barton In Overtime Thriller, Advances To Championship

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke men's basketball team shot 41.9 percent from the field during the contest and outscored Barton 13-7 in overtime on the way to a 79-73 victory against the Bulldogs in the semifinals on Saturday at the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. 
 
The Braves (22-6) have won six out of their last seven games and will play in the Conference Carolinas Tournament finals on Sunday against Emmanuel. The setback for the Bulldogs (15-16) snapped a three-game winning streak and fall to 28-50 all-time against UNCP. 
 
UNCP and Emmanuel will meet for the second time this season. The Lions defeated the Braves 78-67 on Feb. 3, and lead the series 3-2. 




 
THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST HALF
UNC Pembroke shot 50 percent from the floor in the opening period and took a 15-7 lead with a three-point play from Dallas Gardner with 13:13 on the clock. The Braves pushed their lead out to 22-12 with a layup from JaJuan Carr, but Barton chipped away at their deficit with a 7-0 run to trail 22-19 at the 7:30 mark. An Amare Miller fastbreak layup padded the UNCP lead, 32-25, but the Bulldogs closed out the half on an 11-3 run to establish a 36-35 lead as the teams headed into the locker rooms. 
2ND HALF
Barton used a quick start and took a 46-41 lead following a layup from Donaven Hairston six minutes into the half. The Braves regained the lead and held a 52-50 advantage with a 8-2 run capped off by a bucket from Bradlee Haskell with just under 11 minutes remaining. An Elijah Cobb basket and a triple from Nygell Verdier put UNCP in front 63-61, but Donaven Hairston answered with a 3-pointer to put Barton ahead 64-63 with 1:39 left in regulation. Bradlee Haskell's three from the top of key gave the top-seeded Braves the lead by two, but Reese McDonald canned a jumper with 33 seconds left to knot the score at 66 and send the game into overtime. 
OVERTIME
Nygell Verdier sparked the offense on a 9-0 run to give the Braves a 77-68 lead with just 42 seconds remaining in the game. Barton was held to just 2-for-9 from the field during overtime as the Braves shot 50 percent from the floor to fuel the outcome. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Bradlee Haskell finished with a career-high 24 points highlighted by a perfect 11-for-11 clip from the free throw line
+ Nygell Verdier turned in 17 points and was 6-for-13 from the field. The junior nearly registered a double-double with seven defensive rebounds.
+ Elijah Cobb finished with eight points, 13 rebounds, and four blocks. JaJuan Carr added eight points and nine boards. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 41.9 percent from the field and limited Barton to 34.7 percent shooting. The Bulldogs shot just 22.2 percent from the field in overtime. 
+ The Black & Gold scored 15 second chance points on 15 offensive rebounds. 
+ The Braves posted a 48-36 advantage in rebounds. UNCP also held a 36-24 advantage with points in the paint. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will play for the Conference Carolinas Tournament title on Sunday against Emmanuel. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. at the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
