Wingate Rallies Late, Defeats Football In Season Opener

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke football team put together a drive with under a minute left in regulation, but Wingate intercepted the pass on their own 29-yard line to secure a 17-12 victory over the Braves on Saturday at Grace P. Johnson Stadium.
 
The Braves (0-1) converted on just one of seven third down opportunities, while the Bulldogs (1-0) capitalized on six of their 13 third down attempts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
UNC Pembroke's Darius Edmundson intercepted a Brooks Bentley pass and returned it 54 yards to position the UNCP offense at the Wingate 16-yard line. Colin Johnson rushed up the middle for a gain of eight yards, followed by an eight-yard pass to Jayden Smith for a UNCP touchdown. UNCP 6, WU 0
 
The Braves turned the ball over on downs and Wingate started their drive on their own 30-yard line. Brooks Bentley moved the offense down the field with an 18-yard pass to Carlos Estronza, followed by a rush from Bentley for a gain of 11-yards. Bentley found an open Evan McCray for an 11-yard completion, to set up a 13-yard rushing touchdown from Corey Siemer. WU 7, UNCP 6
3RD QUARTER
Corey Siemer rushed up the middle for a gain of 11 yards, and Brooks Bentley picked up a Wingate first down with a run for 10 yards. Noah Bell completed a pass to Evan McCray for a two-yard touchdown. WU 14, UNCP 6
 
Colin Johnson completed a deep 43-yard pass to Josh Jenkins, which led to a 31-yard rush up the middle from JaQuan Albright at the Wingate 15. Johnson broke through the defense for an 11-yard touchdown. WU 14, UNCP 12
4TH QUARTER
Wingate maintained control of the ball the final five minutes of the third quarter and drove down to the UNCP 18 to enter the fourth quarter. Brooks Bentley connected with Evan McCray to move the Bulldogs offense down to the UNCP 12-yard line. Caleb Bonsteel drilled a 29-yard field goal attempt to end the drive. WU 17, UNCP 12
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Colin Johnson completed 15 passes for 206 yards and one touchdown. 
+ JaQuan Albright rushed three times for 32 yards. The newcomer also caught five passes for 66 yards. 
+ Malik McKinzie finished with eight total tackles. Jamae Blank chipped in seven tackles, 1 tackle for a loss of two yards and one sack for two yards. 
NOTABLES
+ Saturday's setback marked the first home opener loss for UNC Pembroke since 2020.
+ Wingate has now won the last five contests against UNCP. 
+ The Bulldogs finished with 338 total offensive yards while the Braves tallied 310 total offensive yards. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will be back in action on September 7 when they make the short trip to Fayetteville State for the Two Rivers Classic. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium.
