Women’s Basketball Battles By King

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team rallied from a 19-point deficit and held King to its second-lowest shooting performance this season on the way to a 55-49 victory on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The Braves (13-3, 7-1 CC) have now won their last three contests and remain unbeaten when playing in Pembroke this season. The Tornado (5-8, 3-3 CC) have now lost their last four contests and are now 0-7 when playing on the road this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Zaria Clark tied the score at 2-2 with a jumper in the paint, but King went on a 16-0 run to take an 18-2 lead after a three from Sarah Thompson with 2:23 on the clock. Malea Garrison stopped the run with a jumper, but the Tornado shot a game-high 61.5 percent from the floor and held a 23-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. 
2ND QUARTER
King took its largest lead of the contest, 25-6, off of a jumper from Alexa Gramann just 15 seconds into the period. The Braves chipped away at their deficit, 27-14 after back-to-back triples from Stella Mollica with seven minutes remaining in the half. King pushed its lead out to 29-14 with a layup from Le'Aije Ellington, but UNCP finished the half on an 11-4 run to send the teams to the locker room with King holding a slight 33-25 advantage. 
3RD QUARTER
UNCP cut its deficit back to 35-30 after a 3-pointer from Natalie Evington with 7:32 on the clock, but Sarah Thompson made a pair of free throws to give the Tornado a 37-30 lead. The Braves made it a one possession game, 39-37, following buckets from Malea Garrison and Stella Mollica with 1:02 remaining in the period, but King answered with a pair of baskets to lead 43-37 with 18 seconds on the clock. The hosts shot 50 percent from the floor and used a triple at the top of the key from Kelci Adams as time expired to head into the final period trailing 43-40. 
4TH QUARTER
Stella Mollica's layup to start the quarter sparked UNC Pembroke on an 11-0 run to gain a 51-43 advantage with 1:54 remaining in regulation. Sarah Thompson knocked down a three seconds later to cut the Tornado deficit back to 51-46, but UNCP held King to just 13.3 percent shooting during the period to secure the comeback victory. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Stella Mollica matched a game-high with 16 points on a 5-for-10 shooting performance. The senior pulled down seven rebounds, dished out four assists and had a pair of steals in 35 minutes of work.
+ Hannah Russell came off of the bench to add nine points and six rebounds in 23 minutes of action.
+ Malea Garrison grabbed a team-high eight rebounds coming off of the bench and chipped in a half dozen points. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 38.2 percent from the field and held King to 30.9 percent shooting. 
+ Despite King's game-high 61.5 percent shooting in the first quarter, the 30.9 percent shooting marks the second lowest of the season.
+ King held the lead for 30:57 minutes of Saturday's contest. 
+ The Braves scored 20 points from its bench and 17 points off of 14 King turnovers. 

+ The Black & Gold have held their last three opponents to under 50 points.

The Braves will hit the road on Wednesday to battle with Chowan. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. at Bob Burke Court in Murfreesboro, N.C.
