Women’s Basketball Rattles Chowan In Key Conference Win

MURFREESBORO – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team shot a season-high 52.9 percent from the perimeter and held the lead for over half of the contest on the way to a key 60-54 victory over Chowan on Wednesday evening at Bob Burke Court. 
 
The Braves (14-3, 8-1 CC) have now won their last four contests and improve to 12-6 all-time against Chowan, winning the last five matchups. The setback for the Hawks (9-1, 6-1 CC) snapped a nine-game win streak and marked the first loss of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Both teams got a slow start, but Hannah Russell scored the first bucket of the game to give UNC Pembroke an early 2-0 lead at the seven-minute mark, but Chowan's Kaleah Boykin answered with a layup to tie the score. The Braves scored the next six points to push their lead out to 8-4 following a Stella Mollica jumper, but the Hawks tied the score at 8 with a bucket from Meara Carter with two minutes remaining in the quarter. Both teams got a basket before the end of the quarter to finish the frame tied at 10.
2ND QUARTER
The hosts started the quarter on a 7-0 run to take what would be their largest lead of the contest, 17-10, after a jumper from Yasmine Brown two minutes into the period. Kelci Adams sparked a 10-0 run for UNCP highlighted by back-to-back triples to give the Braves a 20-17 advantage with five minutes on the clock. Chowan was able to cut its deficit back to 25-33 after a layup from Denea Mackey with 1:34 remaining in the half, but UNCP closed out the quarter on a 6-0 surge to hold a 31-23 lead as the teams headed into the locker rooms. 
3RD QUARTER
Chowan started the half on a 7-0 run to whittle their deficit back to 31-30 after a layup from Alexandria James-Fearon at the 6:06 mark. Kelci Adams stopped the run with a 3-pointer to push the UNCP lead out to 34-30, but the Hawks outscored the Braves 7-1 to lead 39-35 with 2:06 remaining in the quarter. The Braves were held to just 13.3 percent shooting during the quarter as Chowan held a slight 43-40 advantage as the teams headed into the final stanza.
4TH QUARTER
Zaria Clark knocked down a mid-range jumper to start the quarter and worked the UNC Pembroke deficit back to 43-42, but Chowan's Meara Carter made good on a layup to give the Hawks a 45-42 lead with 9:08 remaining in regulation. Kelci Adams canned a three followed by back-to-back triples from Stella Mollica to put UNCP out in front 51-49 at the five-minute mark. Yasmine Brown made good on a free throw as the hosts trailed 51-50, but Kelci Adams started the Braves on a 9-0 run with a three to give UNCP its largest lead of the contest, 60-50 with just 46 seconds remaining. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Kelci Adams finished with a game-high 21 points highlighted by a 7-for-9 clip from the perimeter. The graduate student pulled down four rebounds as well. Adams matched her own school record with the seven 3's made during Wednesday's contest.
+ Stella Mollica added a dozen points after a 5-for-11 clip from the field. Mollica flirted with a double-double with eight rebounds, while also adding five assists and two steals. 
+ Anastasia Sinclair chipped in 10 points and was 6-for-9 from the free throw line. Sinclair finished with a team-best three steals. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 35.1 percent from the floor and held Chowan to its lowest shooting percentage of the season with the Hawks shooting 32.2 percent from the field. 
+ The Braves shot a season-best 52.9 percent from the perimeter. 
+ UNCP tallied 39 rebounds, while CU finished with 36 rebounds. It is the first time this season that Chowan has been out rebounded. 
+ The Black & Gold held the lead for 55.8 percent of Wednesday's contest.
