No. 21 Belmont Abbey Fends Off Women’s Basketball With Fourth Quarter Surge

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team shot 47.7 percent from the floor, but a late fourth quarter run helped No. 21 Belmont Abbey to a 62-58 victory on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The setback for the Braves (14-4, 8-2 CC) snapped a four-game winning streak and marked the first loss at home this season. The Crusaders (14-2, 8-0 CC) have now won their last 12 games and improve to 5-2 when playing on the road this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
UNC Pembroke took an early 4-2 lead following a layup from Zaria Clark, but Belmont Abbey scored the next two buckets to lead 6-4 at the 6:30 mark. The Braves used a pair of Stella Mollica free throws and a three from Kelci Adams in transition to give the hosts a 9-3 advantage halfway through the quarter. UNCP shot 54.5 percent from the floor as the teams were locked at 15 after the first period. 
2ND QUARTER
The Crusaders pushed their lead out to 23-17 after a layup from Peyton Nation with 4:44 remaining in the half, but a jumper from Natalie Evington moments later cut the UNCP deficit back to 23-19. BAC shot 63.6 percent from the field and outscored the Braves 7-5 to hold a slight 30-26 lead as the teams headed into the locker rooms.
3RD QUARTER
Belmont Abbey took its largest lead of the contest, 33-24, after an old-fashioned three-point play from Abigail Crain just two minutes into the half. Stella Mollica sparked the Braves on a 16-2 surge that stretched to the three-minute marked capped off with a three from Kelci Adams to give the hosts a 40-35 lead. Cate Schieber stopped the run with a three from the top of key, but UNC Pembroke shot a game-high 66.7 percent from the floor during the quarter and held a 46-41 lead heading into the final stanza.
4TH QUARTER
Stella Mollica's jumper gave the Braves their largest lead of the contest, 51-46, with 8:41 remaining in regulation, but Belmont Abbey went on a 10-0 run to take a 57-51 advantage with 1:50 left in the contest. A made free throw from Hannah Russell cut the UNCP deficit back to 57-54 with 57 seconds on the clock, but the Crusaders outscored the Braves 8-4 in the final seconds for the outcome. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Stella Mollica finished with 12 points on a 5-for-14 shooting performance. The senior pulled down four rebounds and had a trio of assists. 
+ Hannah Russell came off of the bench to add a dozen points after a 4-for-10 shooting performance. Russell added fix rebounds, two assists and two steals in 30 minutes of work.  
+ Anastasia Sinclair chipped in 10 points and was 4-for-6 from the free throw line. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 47.7 percent from the floor, while Belmont Abbey shot a season-best 52.3 percent from the field.
+ The Braves went 12-for-19 from the free throw line, while the Crusaders finished the contest going 15-of-22 from the charity stripe.
+ Belmont Abbey outscored UNC Pembroke 40-26 with points in the paint. The Crusaders also scored 26 points from 20 UNCP turnovers.
+ The Black & Gold picked up 16 points from its bench
