Women’s Basketball Battles By Converse

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team shot 57.6 percent from the field in the second half and had four players score in double-figures on the way to a 64-59 victory at Converse on Saturday inside the Tom & Tracy Hannah Gym. 
 
The Braves (15-4, 9-2 CC) have now won their last three road contests, and improve to 6-1 all-time against Converse. The Valkyries (4-13, 2-8 CC) have now lost seven out of their last eight contests and fall to just 3-9 when playing at home this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Converse took what would be its largest lead of the contest, 4-0, following a layup from Amaia Parkins just 30 seconds into the action. UNC Pembroke answered with a 6-0 run capped off with a three from the top of the key from Natalie Evington to give UNCP a 7-4 lead with four minutes remaining in the opening quarter. Tatiana Brown stopped with run with a jumper, but Zaria Clark send the Braves on a 6-0 surge to give UNC Pembroke its largest lead of the game, 13-6 following a layup from Hannah Russell at the 1:51 mark. Converse scored the final two points of the period to trail 13-11 heading into the second quarter. 
2ND QUARTER
Stella Mollica's jumper extended the UNC Pembroke lead out to 15-11 at the 7:24 mark, but Converse put together a 5-3 surge to cut its deficit back to 18-16 with three minutes remaining in the half. Zaria Clark cushionied the UNCP lead, 20-16, with a jumper moments later, but the hosts scored the next four points to knot the score at 20 apiece with 1:40 on the clock. Kelci Adams knocked down a pair of free throws to end the half and give the Braves a 22-20 advantage as the teams headed into the locker rooms. 
3RD QUARTER
UNC Pembroke shot a game-high 66.9 percent from the floor during the quarter and used a driving layup from Anastasia Sinclair to take a slight 30-29 lead with 5:46 remaining in the period. Converse scored three-straight points to give the hosts a 37-34 advantage at the two-minute mark, but Anastasia Sinclair's layup cut the UNCP deficit back to 37-36. The Valkyries outscored the Braves 4-2 in the final seconds to hold a 41-38 lead heading into the final stanza.
4TH QUARTER
Converse capitalized on a jumper from Elisa Sole Sanchez to push its lead out to 43-40 just 30 seconds into the period, but 6-2 UNCP run gave the Braves a 47-45 lead following a jumper from Stella Mollica with 7:20 remaining in regulation. Jordan Brown made good on a layup to knot the score at 47, but an old-fashioned three-point play from Anastasia Sinclair put the Braves out in front 50-47 with 6:25 left to play. The Valkyries got a bucket from Alexis Becker to trail 50-49, but UNC Pembroke went on a 12-7 run capped off with a layup from Kelci Adams to give the Braves a 63-57 lead with just 33 seconds remaining in the contest. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Zaria Clark finished with a game-high 18 points on a 7-for-12 shooting performance. The senior pulled down six rebounds and had a pair of steals as well.
+ Stella Mollica turned in a 14-point showing while dishing out six assists in 36 minutes of work.
+ Anastasia Sinclair chipped in a dozen points, all scored in the second half. Hannah Russell also added 10 points and eight rebounds.
+ Kelci Adams finished with a game-best 10 rebounds. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 44.2 percent from the field while Converse shot 38.3 percent from the floor. 
+ The Braves finished Saturday's game going 15-for-20 from the free throw line, while the Valkyries were 9-for-14 from the charity stripe.
+ The Black & Gold held the lead for 61.8 percent (24:44) of Saturday's victory. 
+ Neither team held a lead larger than seven during the game. 

UP NEXT
The Braves will hit the road on Wednesday and travel to Wilson to face Barton. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m. inside the Wilson Gymnasium.
