MAXTON – The UNC Pembroke softball team finished the opening day of the UNCP Softball Invitational 1-1 after dropping its first game to Kutztown, but then taking down Davis & Elkins in extra innings. 
 
The Bears beat the Braves 3-2, but UNCP defeated D&E 11-6 in eight innings. In the first game of the day, a late two-run homer in the sixth inning proved to be the difference for Kutztown. In the nightcap, the Braves put up seven runs in the top of the eighth inning for a rally after tallying 14 hits against David & Elkins.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 3	Kaitlyn King singled to center, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and stood on third after a groundout. An RBI single from Marijo Wilkes scored King.
TOP 4	Emily Henn got a leadoff triple to the right center field gap and scored on a groundout.
TOP 6	A Stevens reached on a fielder's choice, but Morgan Slomkowski smacked a two-run homer down the right field line that just stayed in fair territory.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 8	With the International Tiebreaker rule in effect, Chloe Locklear started the inning on second base. An RBI single to the outfield gap from Samantha Allred plated Locklear. The Braves loaded the bases, but Alona Hanna smacked a bases-clearing double to left field to give UNCP an 8-4 lead. Alex Serbio singled to left field to drive in a pair of runs, followed by an RBI single from Chloe Locklear to put the Braves ahead 11-4.
