Women’s Basketball Defeats Barton

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team never trailed during Wednesday's contest and scored 17 points from its bench on the way to a 56-46 victory over Barton at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The Braves (12-3, 6-1 CC) have now won their last two games and improve to 6-0 when playing at home this season. The Bulldogs (7-8, 3-4 CC) have now lost their last three games this season and have lost the last six match ups against UNCP.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
UNC Pembroke took an early 9-2 lead following a pair of free throws from Stella Mollica, but Barton scored the next five points to trim its deficit back to 9-7 at the 4:29 mark. The Braves shot 42.9 percent from the field and closed out the period on a 7-5 surge to hold a 16-12 lead after the first quarter.
2ND QUARTER
A triple from Barton's Leah Hampton cut the Bulldogs deficit back to 18-17 with 7:43 remaining in the half. However, UNC Pembroke put together a 10-0 run to push its lead out to 28-17 after a fastbreak layup from Hannah Russell with just under four minutes on the clock. A fastbreak layup from Lauren Mingo stopped the UNCP run, but the Braves shot a game-high 54.5 percent from the floor and held a 33-21 lead as the teams headed into the locker rooms.
3RD QUARTER
Barton continued to chip away at its deficit with a jumper from Celeste Bailey to trail 33-23 just a minute into the half. UNCP went on a 13-5 run that stretched to the 2:40 mark to push its lead out to 46-28 following a Hannah Russell layup. Celeste Bailey picked up a bucket moments later, but DeNaira Williams knocked down a mid-range jumper as time expired to give the Braves a 48-30 lead heading into the final stanza.
4TH QUARTER
A triple to start the quarter from Natalie Evington followed by a jumper from Zaria Clark gave the Braves their largest lead of the night, 53-31 with 8:55 remaining in regulation. Barton answered with nine straight points to work its deficit back to 53-40 after a jumper from Skylar Quillet, but Kelci Adams canned a three with 2:54 left on the clock to push the UNCP lead out to 56-40.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Kelci Adams finished with a game-high 15 points highlighted by a 5-for-6 clip from the perimeter. The graduate student logged a double-double with 10 rebounds in 27 minutes of action. 
+ Zaria Clark tallied a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Clark had a pair of steals and an assist as well.
+ Hannah Russell flirted with a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Russell finished the contest with a 6-for-8 shooting performance.
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke never trailed during Wednesday's victory.
+ The Braves finished the game 7-for-10 from the free throw line, while Barton made good on just 9-of-17 from the line.
+ The Black & Gold also went 7-for-15 from the perimeter, while the Bulldogs were just 3-for-15 from deep.
+ UNCP has limited its last two opponents to under 31.0-percent shooting.
