Soccer Falls To Belmont Abbey

PEMBROKE – UNC Pembroke took a 2-1 lead in the 64th minute, but two late Belmont Abbey goals allowed the Crusaders to take a 3-2 win over the Braves in Conference Carolinas action Saturday afternoon at LREMC Stadium.

Mercy Bell recorded a brace and moved into a tie atop the leaderboard for most career goals in program history with her 43rd and 44th.

The Braves (6-5-1, 6-2-1 CC) moved to 7-3-0 in the all-time series with the Crusaders (9-4-1, 7-1-1 CC), and have now dropped two of the last three matchups with Belmont Abbey.

 
SCORING SUMMARY
8' A failed UNC Pembroke clearance found the foot of Belmont Abbey's Anna Richard, who played a ball onto the head of Caroline Roche, who then redirected a header into the back of the net to give the Crusaders an early 1-0 lead.
20' Eli Soderberg played a ball onto Mercy Bell, who dribbled around the goalkeeper and touched a shot into the open net to make it 1-1.
64' Bell took possession of a loose ball, dribbled free, cut back and fired a left-footed strike from the edge of the penalty area passed the Belmont Abbey goalkeeper to give the Braves a 2-1 lead.
78' Belmont Abbey's Haley Long worked free for a shot and found the back of the net to give the Crusaders the equalizer at 2-2.
85' Maris Toppin's pass ahead snuck through the UNCP defense and found the foot of Hannah Willis, who made good on her shot to give the Crusaders a 3-2 lead.
