Volleyball Downs Shorter, Advances To Tournament Quarterfinals

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team recorded 11 service aces and added eight blocks on the way to a 3-1 (25-17, 25-18, 15-25, 25-18) victory over Shorter in the second round of the Conference Carolinas Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 

The Braves (17-14) have now won their last four matches when playing in Pembroke and will advance to the quarterfinals of the Conference Carolinas Tournament in Bristol, Tenn. The Hawks (16-14) snap a two game win streak and finish the season with a 7-5 record when playing on the road.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 25-17 The opening set began with a tight exchange, but Shorter quickly gained a 2-0 advantage with an early kill by Victoria Sparks. UNC Pembroke responded with a kill from McKenna Hayes and soon leveled the score at 3-3. A pivotal moment occurred when Savannah Whaley's service ace put the home team ahead at 7-5. The Braves then built momentum with a series of errors from the Hawks, extending their lead to 14-7. Abby Peduzzi and McKenna Hayes contributed critical points through kills and blocks. The set concluded at 25-17 following another attack error by Shorter, sealing the first set in favor of the Braves.
SET 2 I 25-18 In the second set, the Braves established an early lead with a 3-0 run, capitalized by a block from Addie Decker and McKenna Hayes.The Hawks rallied to narrow the gap to 12-11 after a service ace by Helena Kelley and a kill from Ava Medina. However, the Braves regained control with a series of strong plays, including a service ace by Isabella Dillman, and extended their lead to 20-14. Savannah Whaley's kill brought the Braves to set point at 24-18, and the set concluded with a service ace from Tyler Patterson, securing a 25-18 win.
SET 3 I 15-25 Shorter gained an early advantage in the third set with Caroline Sivills and Sparks leading the way, contributing to a 6-2 lead. The Braves attempted to close the gap, highlighted by kills from Addie Decker and McKenna Hayes, bringing the score to 7-7. However, the Hawks responded decisively, with Taylor-Reese Howell and Sparks continuing to execute effectively, pushing the lead to 19-12. Despite a late effort by Savannah Whaley for the Braves, the Hawks sealed the set with a final score of 25-15, capitalizing on an attack error to conclude the set.
SET 4 I 25-18 The final set saw the Braves establish an early 4-0 lead, sparked by a kill from McKenna Hayes and a service ace by Isabella Dillman. The Braves extended their lead to 12-2, but the Hawks responded with a five-point run, including two kills from Sparks, narrowing the gap to 12-7. However, the Braves maintained their momentum, with crucial kills from Savannah Whaley and Addie Decker, pushing the score to 20-13. The set concluded with Savannah Whaley securing the final point with a kill, sealing the set at 25-18 and securing the victory for the Braves.
