Women's Basketball Defeats Young Harris In Conference Opener

PEMBROKE The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team shot 56 percent from the field and had five players scored in double-figures on the way to a 77-71 victory over Young Harris on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 

The Braves (1-3, 1-0 CC) snapped a three-game skid and have now won the last six meetings against Young Harris when playing in Pembroke. The Mountain Lions (2-2, 0-1 CC) fall to 7-8 all-time against UNCP.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
The game began with UNC Pembroke taking an early lead against Young Harris, thanks to a three-pointer by Natalie Evington at 9:03. Young Harris responded with a three-pointer from Kamryn Bates at 8:08 to tie the score at 3-3. Shaymiah Bailey contributed significantly for UNC Pembroke, scoring a layup at 4:36, and adding another basket to extend their lead out to 7-3. The quarter concluded with Bre'Asia Washington hitting a jumper with 28 seconds remaining, giving the Braves a 13-8 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
2ND QUARTER
The second quarter saw UNC Pembroke extend their lead over Young Harris with Bre'Asia Washington contributing significantly, scoring from the paint and making multiple free throws. Tiana Spann opened the scoring for the quarter with an offensive rebound and a layup, while Keziyah Sanders added a crucial fast-break layup at 6:53, followed by a successful free throw to put the Braves up by five. The Mountain Lions managed to stay competitive with layups from Bates and Annalise Malone, but UNC Pembroke's effective scoring from the free throw line and a late three-pointer from Keziyah Sanders at 38 seconds left sent the teams to the locker rooms with UNCP holding a 37-26 advantage. 
3RD QUARTER
Young Harris made a push in the third quarter with Bates contributing with early free throws, while Rhiannon Saller's layup at 7:50 helped narrow the gap to 39-34. Natalie Jojola's three-pointer at 6:35 brought Young Harris within one point, 40-39, but Shaymiah Bailey and Keziyah Sanders responded with timely baskets, maintaining a slight 45-39 UNC Pembroke lead. Bre'Asia Washington's layup with 41 seconds left extended their advantage, and her jumper at the buzzer ended the quarter with the Braves leading 56-51.
4TH QUARTER
Joy Tchamabe opened the quarter with a layup, cutting the Mountain Lion deficit back to 56-53. Despite the  effort from Young Harris, including a three-pointer from Telma Balague at 8:28, UNC Pembroke maintained control. Grace Ikenegbu scored back-to-back layups, and Bre'Asia Washington added a three-pointer at 5:48, extending their lead out to 65-58. Natalie Evington's fastbreak three-pointer at 4:45 further increased the margin, and UNC Pembroke held off Young Harris' late push, concluding with Tchamabe's layup in the final second.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Newcomer Bre'Asia Washington scored a game-high 19 points on a 7-for-8 shooting clip. The junior also grabbed four boards and had two assists in 26 minutes of work.
+ Grace Ikenegbu made her debut for the Braves going 6-for-7 from the field with 13 points. The newcomer pulled down six defensive rebounds as well. 
+ Keziyah Sanders turned in a dozen points while grabbing four rebounds, had four assists and tallied two steals. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 56 percent from the field and held Young Harris to 40.3 percent shooting.
+ UNCP had five players score in double-figures.
+ The Black & Gold limited their turnovers to just nine during the contest. 

+ The Braves held the lead for the entire contest.
