Big Second Quarter Helps Barton By Women's Basketball

PEMBROKE The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team shot nearly 77 percent in the opening period, but Barton outscored UNCP 30-11 in the second quarter to help fuel an 82-59 victory over the Braves on Tuesday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 

The Braves (1-4, 1-1 CC) fall to 1-3 when playing at home the season. The Bulldogs (2-3, 1-0 CC) picked up just their third win in Pembroke in the series and the first in the last seven meetings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
The game began with UNC Pembroke asserting control as Tiana Spann scored a layup just 22 seconds in. Spann contributed significantly, adding another two layups by the 6:03 mark, helping the home team maintain their lead. Keziyah Sanders and Anastasia Sinclair also made impactful plays, with Sanders draining a three-pointer at 2:56 to give UNCP a 15-9 lead. The Bulldogs managed to keep pace with a three-pointer from Layne Sleight at 3:59 and a late layup by Celeste Bailey to cut their deficit back to 21-15 to end the first period. 
2ND QUARTER
The Bulldogs took control in the second quarter with a strong offensive performance, shooting 13-for-18 from the field. Makayla Noble's layup at 9:40 initiated the Bulldogs' surge, trailing just 21-17. Dasani Williamson's consistent scoring in the paint helped Barton maintain momentum, as she contributed multiple layups. Anastasia Sinclair kept the Braves competitive with a jumper and free throw at 4:38 to keep the hosts ahead 28-25, but Cyntiah Braden's three-pointer shortly after shifted the lead back to the Bulldogs. Barton's late-quarter push, including a layup from Lauren Mingo with 3 seconds remaining, extended their lead, concluding the quarter with Barton leading 45-35 as the teams headed into the locker rooms. 
3RD QUARTER
The Bulldogs took control early in the third quarter, with Williamson scoring a layup at 9:38 to extend their lead out to47-35. Barton's offensive momentum continued as Sleight added a layup and a free throw, pushing the score to 54-35. UNC Pembroke's Anastasia Sinclair responded by hitting two free throws at 6:28, narrowing the deficit back to 54-37. Despite a three-pointer from Natalie Evington at 2:35, Barton maintained their lead with consistent scoring, including a jumper from Mingo at 1:09 to hold a 65-48 lead heading into the final period. 
4TH QUARTER
In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs maintained control with a strong defensive showing, registering two steals and holding the Braves to just 11 points. Candice Williams was instrumental for Barton, contributing a layup and two free throws with 3:47 remaining, extending the lead to 74-57. Keziyah Sanders provided a spark for the Braves, scoring multiple baskets, but it was not enough to close the gap. Noble sealed Barton's victory with consecutive layups in the final minutes, culminating in an 82-59 win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Keziyah Sanders scored a career-high 16 points on a 7-for-18 shooting performance. The sophomore had a trio of steals, two assists and one rebound in 35 minutes of work.
+ Anastasia Sinclair finished with 14 points and went 5-for-12 from the field. The junior had a pair of assists, two rebounds, two steals, and one block.
+ Tiana Spann also added 14 points on a 6-for-7 shooting night. Spann pulled down five rebounds and had a steal.
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 42.6 percent from the field, while Barton shot 52.5 percent from the floor. 
+ The Black & Gold got outscored 48-28 with points in the paint. 
+ UNCP tallied 15 points in transition. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will return to action on Dec. 1 when they trek to take on Elizabeth City State in a non-conference contest. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. inside the R.L. Vaughan Center.
