Women's Basketball Falls Short At Elizabeth City State

ELIZABETH CITY The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team outscored Elizabeth City State 21-11 in the third quarter, but the Vikings converted on 25 UNCP turnovers to fuel a 58-56 victory over the Braves on Monday evening inside the R.L. Vaughan Center. 

The Braves (1-5) have now lost their last two contests and fall to 0-2 when playing on the road this season. The Vikings (2-3) have now won their last two games and remain perfect at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
The game began with UNC Pembroke taking an early lead, highlighted by a three-pointer from Natalie Evington at 7:01, putting them ahead 5-0. However, the Elizabeth City State responded with a series of successful free throws and a layup by Tionna Pettus, narrowing the gap to 6-3. As the quarter progressed, Danasja Horne's consistent scoring, including two crucial 3-pointers, gave the Vikings a 17-11 advantage by the end of the first quarter. Turnovers plagued both teams, but Elizabeth City State capitalized on late opportunities to secure the lead.
2ND QUARTER
Anastasia Sinclair opened the scoring for the Braves with a jumper at 9:56 to cut the UNCP deficit back to 17-13. Jada Clark responded with consistent scoring, adding crucial points with a jumper at 6:00 as the hosts held a 20-13 lead. Despite Anastasia Sinclair's efforts, including two successful free throws at 4:14, Elizabeth City State maintained their lead by capitalizing on turnovers and defensive rebounds and held a 28-20 lead as the teams headed into the locker room.
3RD QUARTER
Grace Ikenegbu and Shaymiah Bailey were instrumental during the period, with Ikenegbu contributing key layups and Bailey securing crucial points in the paint. With 1:08 remaining, Natalie Evington converted two free throws to put the Braves ahead 39-38. The quarter concluded with Shaymiah Bailey hitting a jumper with 17 seconds left, giving UNC Pembroke a 41-39 lead. The Vikings were unable to capitalize on their opportunities at the line, with Kailyn Young missing a critical three-pointer as time expired as UNCP 41-39 lead heading into the final period.
4TH QUARTER
Natalie Evington opened the quarter with a three-pointer for the Braves to push the lead out to 44-39. Young responded with critical baskets, including a three-pointer at 5:53 to level the score at 51-51. Clark's layup at 1:37 gave Elizabeth City State a 57-54 lead, but Bre'Asia Washington cut the UNCP deficit to 57-56 with a layup moments later. The Braves forced a turnover and had a chance send the game to overtime, but a turnover and a missed shot stopped the comeback. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Natalie Evington finished with a team-best 13 points and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. The junior grabbed five rebounds and had one assist in 31 minutes of work.
+ Anastasia Sinclair went 4-for-9 from the floor and added 10 points to go along with three steals in 33 minutes of action.
+ Grace Ikenegbu flirted with a double-double with eight points and a game and career-high 14 rebounds.
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 35.3 percent from the field while Elizabeth City State shot 32.1 percent from the floor.
+ The Black & Gold went 17-for-20 from the free throw line. 
+ Neither team had a lead larger than eight throughout the contest. 
+ UNCP outscored ECSU 21-11 in the third quarter.
+ The Braves committed 25 turnovers and allowed the Vikings to score 25 points from those turnovers.

The Braves will travel to Richmond, Va., on Saturday for a non-conference contest with Virginia Union. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. inside Barco-Stevens Hall.
